August 7, 2013, Toronto, ON – Tennis Canada announced Wednesday the players selected to participate in the first-of-its-kind men’s invitational at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto. James Blake, Feliciano Lopez and Bernard Tomic will travel to Toronto for exhibition matches on Thursday and Friday.
The event, which builds off of the virtually combined format adopted by the Montreal and Toronto events in 2011, will see Lopez and Tomic face-off against each other in a night session match on Thursday, August 8. On Friday evening, Blake will take on Sampras as part of Rogers Legends Cup. Sampras, who will also play against McEnroe on Saturday night, is replacing Andy Roddick who will not be able to participate due to a back injury. Rogers Legends Cup will conclude on Sunday with a match between McEnroe and Jim Courier prior to the WTA final.
The majority of the funding necessary for Rogers Legends Cup and the men’s invitational was provided by the Government of Ontario through the Celebrate Ontario program. Celebrate Ontario is an annual program designed to drive tourism and help boost the province’s economy. The program helps festivals and events across the province enhance their products to attract a greater audience.
This year’s men’s invitational will serve as a test event for potential expansion in future years.
