Australian Bernard Tomic missed out on a chance to test himself against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic as the youngest member of the ATP top 50 lost an early lead to go down in the opening round 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to German Florian Mayer. Mayer stand 0-5 against top seed Djokovic, who has a bye into the second round.

Mayer, 29, won his fourth match from five against Tomic, who couldn’t make use of his early first-set lead, “I was up 5-2 in the first set and should have closed it out in the second. In the second set I didn’t start that well. My concentration dropped and he played well. In the first set he was tight but in the second I missed my opportunities and didn’t focus very well – he took over then.”

Aussie qualifier Marinko Matosevic, who beat Canadian Milos Raonic last week in Washington, made up for Tomic’s loss as he reached the second round over Germany’s Benjamin Becker 6-2, 6-3. Croatian Ivan Dodig beat Grega Zemlja 6-1, 6-1. Italy’s Andreas Seppi beat Czech Lukas Rosol 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) while colorful Latvian Ernests Gulbis stopped experienced Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Jesse Levine earned the first Canadian win of the week as he beat Xavier Malisse 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) to next face Rafael Nadal as the Spaniard plays for the first time in six weeks since his first-round Wimbledon defeat. The run of poor form continued for Janko Tipsarevic and the 16th seed was defeated by Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-3.

With the leading eight seeds still not yet on court, the practice courts were filled with household names on a sunny day. Two-time champion Andy Murray (2008-09) has been hitting for nearly a week under the supervision of coach Ivan Lendl as the Scot prepares to debut on cement following his Wimbledon title last month.

The world No. 2 said he is already dreaming of repeating as US Open winner while trying to say focused on Montreal. Confessed Murray: “I want to try and do well here but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking of the Open.”
