Top seed Juan Martin del Potro has booked a place in Sunday’s Citi Open final, after recovering from a slow start to defeat third seeded German Tommy Haas 7-6(4), 6-3, in a semi-final battle that lasted almost two hours.
The Argentine trailed Haas 1-4 before a rain delay halted play in Washington, D.C., but quickly recovered the deficit when play resumed. Del Potro served for the first set at 5-4, but was broken by his elder opponent. He saved two set points at 5-6, one with a thundering ace.
“I was down in the beginning, but I think the rain helped me to come back in the first set,” said del Potro. “I was lucky in that moment, but in the end I played so solid.”
Del Potro next faces eighth seed John Isner, who needed three sets to overcome Dmitry Tursunov.
“Against Isner, here in the United States, [on] hard courts, and with his serve, it’s going to be a really terrible match for me but I will try to return some serves and play my game. Being in the final means a lot to me,” said the World No. 7. Del Potro is chasing his second title of the season following victory in Rotterdam in February.
The 24-year-old del Potro has a FedEx ATP Head2Head record of 3-0 against Isner, with all victories coming on hard courts in America.
The American No. 1 said he expects a tough match. “He has every part of the game down [pat]. He obviously serves very well, but he returns exceptionally well…he just crushes the ball from the baseline,” said Isner. The 28 year old is seeking his third ATP World Tour title of the season, following success in Atlanta and Houston.
