Carlsbad
Australian Samantha Stosur and Virginie Razzano of France both reached their first semi-finals of the season with labored wins. Former US Open champion Stosur, seeded fifth, put out second seed Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, taking two and a half hours on a day of lengthy matches to go through. The unseeded Razzano fulfilled her wild card entry an more by stunning 2011 Wimbledon winner and third seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in a 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) marathon which took more than three and a half hours.
The Frenchwoman ranked number 131, may have taken some inspiration from compatriot Marion Bartoli’s Wimbledon win of last month as she reached a semi for the first time in more than four years (Eastbourne, June, 2009).
The 30-year-old winner wasted a quartet of match points in the epic and saved two from her high-profile opponent on the way to the upset.
A Kvitova double-fault ended the struggle. “I was nervous, I’m human, not a robot,” said Razzano. “You sometimes feel stress. I tried to focus on the points.” The contest turned into the second longest on the WTA this season after Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Anastasia Rodionova went 3:42 at Charleston four months ago.
Razzano had not beaten a top 10 players since stunning Serena Williams in the first round of the French Open a year ago. The winner battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the final set with the Czech.
Top seed Victoria Azarenka overcame six double-faults as she beat Urszula Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 6-2. Azarenka is playing for the first time since withdrawing from Wimbledon with an ankle injury six weeks ago.

Comeback candidate Andrea Petkovic upheld German honor with her 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 quarter-final defeat of Argentine Paula Ormaechea as compatriot and top seed Angelique Kerber lost to holder Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6(0), 3-6, 6-3.
The Slovak winner lost her second set of the week but it hardly mattered as she completed her upset win in two and a quarter hours with six double-faults from Kerber, ranked ninth on the WTA.
The defending champion admits she is under the gun at this edition.
“For sure, there is a lot of pressure this year. Kerber’s a great player, a Top 10 player, and I has to play relaxed,” she said of the first-time meeting. Kerber struck six double-faults in defeat. Added Kerber: “It was a close match. but I couldn’t find my rhythm at all the whole [match.] It was not my day today.”
Rybaricova will next line up against Russian third seed Ekaterina Makarova, who beat Monica Niculescu but barely lifting a racquet 1-0 when the Romanian retired. French fourth seed Alize Cornet put out Romania’s other hope with her defeat of fifth seed Sorana Cirstea 7-6(5), 6-2.
