Kitzbuhel
Argentine Juan Monaco moved closer to his second title in Austria as the second seed beat No. 7 Alberto Montanes 7-6(2), 7-5 in the semi-finals.
Monaco will fight for the trophy in the Alps against another Spaniard when he plays Marcel Granollers, who ended the unbeaten tournament run of Robin Haase (12 straight match victories and two consecutive titles) 7-6(0), 3-6, 6-4. Monaco was competing in his third semi-final of the clay summer and won his 21st match on the season on the surface.
Against Haase, Hranollers lost his serve for the first time during the week as he defeated last week’s Gstaad finalist in two and a half hours. “It was a very hard match today in the semi-finals,” said the winner. “It was very hot, but in the end I was able to win. I’m happy to be in the final.”
It will be his first shot at a trophy in 13 months; he heads into the contest standing 3-2 in career finals on the ATP
Washington DC
2012 finalist Tommy Haas continued his title campaign as he put out 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov 7-6(5), 7-6(3) for a semi-final place joining eighth seed John Isner in the final four in the capital after the American defeated No. 16 seed and one-time finalist Marcos Baghdatis 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
Isner, winner of last week’s Atlanta title, won his seventh straight match on US hardcourt in the pre-US Open run-up. One break of serve per set was enough for Isner, who rocketed over 18 aces. in a huge serving display.
It was his sixth win from as many ATP quarter-finals in 2013.
He will next play Russian Dmitry Tursunov, who needed the full distance to beat a cramping Marinko Matosevic 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4). Isner will be looking for his second Washington final after winning it in his first outing in 2007. Isner remains the lone American in the field form a dozen who began in the first round.
Top seed and 2008-2009 champion Juan Del Potro produced a 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 win over South African Kevin Anderson to advance to the final four, never facing a break point in one and three-quarter hours. The Argentine improved to 5-0 in the series as he won his 24th match on hardcourt this season to stand 12-1 at the tournament which suits his style. Anderson was playing his seventh ATP quarter-final.
