Kitzbuhel
Second seed and 2007 champion Juan Monaco continued his quest for the last summer clay title before the serious start of the pre-US Open hardcourt season, with the on-form Argentine defeating Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 for a his third semi-final place of the clay summer. The South American who claimed the trophy in May at Dusseldorf won his 20th clay match of the season.
With Spaniards featuring in all four matches of the day, Gimeno-Traver was joined on the sidelines by compatriot and third seed Fernando Verdasco, who exited 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the hands of undefeated Kitz hero Robin Hasse, with the Dutchman winning his 12th consecutive match of the last three editions. Haas was ruthless with 2005 finalist Verdasco, with the winner still carrying the confidence of his Gstaad final last weekend.
Two more Spaniards also advanced as No. 7 Albert Montanes beat Austria’s Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-3 to next face Monaco, ranked 31st.
Marcel Granollers defeated Argentine Leo Mayer 6-3, 6-1. In doubles, last week’s Gstaad winner Jamie Murray of Britain and Australian John J Peers moved into the semi-finals over Haase and South African partner Raven Klaasen 6-1, 6-3.
Washington DC
Top seed Juan Del Potro doubled up with two wins on the day after a rainout 24 hours earlier and claimed his 11th straight victory in the capital. The back-to-back wins over young guns Ryan Harrison (6-1, 7-5) followed by late-night success against Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-3 put the Argentine ins solid command in his first hardcourt event of the summer.
Del Potro has found his comfort zone in the past here, winning the title in 2009 and 2008. He last won a trophy on hardcourt indoors in Rotterdam in February. Next up for Del Potro is South African Kevin Anderson against whom he holds a 4-0 record. Anderson booked his place as he kept Mardy Fish from a 300th career win 7-6(2), 6-1.
Canadian fourth seed Milos Raonic continues to struggle, losing his pre-US Open start to Australian Marinko Matosevic 7-5, 7-6(7), a disappointment before the home Montreal Masters next week despite 19 aces. Raonic has now lost five of his last seven matches.
Former Australian Open finalist Baghdatis knocked out second seed Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-2 in their third-round contest after Nishikori and won a rain-hit match over Jack Sock to start his day. Atlanta champion and eighth seed John Isner beat Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 7-5, a revenge win for a university championship match six years ago.
Russian Dmitry Tursunov, who will miss Montreal due to a visa delay, beat Czech veteran Radek Stepanek, prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 for his 200th match win, with the No. 61 next facing Matosevic.
