Carlsbad
Agnieszka and Urszula Radwanska moved into the quarter-finals, with second-seeded elder sister Agnieszka, a finalist last weekend in Stanford, starting the hardcourt build-up with a defeat of Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-3. The Pole came back from a break down in the second set and ran out the winner in 80 minutes to take a 6-2 lead in the series with the Slovak.
Radwanska will next face Australian fifth seed Samantha Stosur for a place in the semi-finals. Sibling Urszula, at 22 just two years younger than her sister, knocked out former No. 1`and sixth seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The grinding win took nearly two and a half hours but gave Radwanska a huge boost. “I’m very happy with the match,” said the No. 39 Urszula. “I’m playing with a lot more confidence. “This is a big step for me. She was top-ranked once and I was facing her for the first time. I knew it would be tough. She’s always been a great fighter.”
The younger Radwanska will play on Friday against top seed Victoria Azarenka, making her return after nearly six weeks out due to a knee injury which forced her to forfeit her second-round Wimbledon match in June.
France’s Virginie Razzano belied her number 131 WTA status as she upset Spanish eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-4, breaking four times in the victory. Seventh seed Ana Ivanovic put out local Coco Vandeweghe 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Washington DC
One seed went down in the second round, with No. 8 American Madison Keys losing to Monica Niculescu 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(6). But it was smooth sailing for the rest led by No. 1 German Angelique Kerber, who beat Melanie Oudin of the US 7-5, 6-0. Third-seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova put out France’s Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-0 while fourth seed Alize Cornet took a French win at the expense of Britain’s Heather Watson 6-4, 6-4.
Romanian fifth seed Sorana Cirstea defeated American Alison Riske 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and seventh seed Magdalena Rybarikova got past Jana Cepelova 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
