Kitzbuhel
Argentine Leo Mayer knocked off German top seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 7-6(4) in the first major upset at the alpine event. The win was the second in a row in the series for the South American, who also beat “Kohli” at Roland Garros.
Facing Mayer in the quarter-finals at the famed ski resort was eighth seed Marcel Granollers of Spain, who won after eight games as Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos retired with a rib injury. Granoloers repeated his quarter-final showing from last week in Gstaad, also on high-altitude fast clay.
Gstaad finalist Haase and two-time champion in Kitzbuhel stretched his winning run at the famed winter resort to 10 straight wins dating to his debut in 2011 with an opening defeat of Frenchman Guillaume Rufin 6-4, 7-6(4).
Victor Hanescu, losing Gstaad finalist to Haase, began his week with a win, defeating Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia 6-2, 6-1, while Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez will face off with compatriot Fernando Verdasco. Garcia-Lopez beat Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci 6-7(1), 6-3, 7-6(4), taking almost three hours. Local wild card Andreas Haider-Maurer came good with a victory over compatriot Dennis Novak 6-4, 6-4. The German conqueror last week of Roger Federer, German Daniel Brands, began with a victory against Argentine fifth seed Carlos Berlocq 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2.
