Kitzbuhel
Austrian Dominic Thiem played and won his first ATP match since the Vienna tournament nearly ten months ago as he started the mountain event over American Kuznetsov 6-2, 7-5. But Spaniards stole the show in the Alps, with eighth seed Marcel Granollers beating wild card Mate Pavic 7-6(2), 6-2, with last week’s Gstaad quarter-finalist nearing level-pegging this season with a 15-17 record as he aims for a first title in two years.
Granollers was joined in the second round by seventh-seeded compatriot Albert Montanes, a winner over Romanian Adrian Unger 6-4, 6-2. Also winning: countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who lost to Stanislas Wawrinka last week in Gstaad. He stared with a victory against Croatian Antonio Veic with the loss of just four games.
Two Argentines made the most of their starts, with Horacio Zeballos handing Austria a second defeat on opening day as he put out Martin Fischer 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 and Leo Mayer beating Frenchman Kenny de Schepper 6-4, 6-4. Mayer next plays top seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.
Washington DC
Mardy Fish made a positive step back from his long-running medical heart-beat issue, winning only his second match of the season from five played. The American started out in the capital by defeating Australian beat Matthew Ebden 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.
But Aussie Samuel Groth got one back in the Australian-American rivalry as he put out Denis Kudla of the US 7-6(2), 6-2 while Belgian David Goffin defeated Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan 6-4 6-4. Czech 34-year-old Radek Stepanek, playing for the first time since Wimbledon, handed Steve Johnson, the former NCAA champion, a 7-6(3), 6-3 loss, his second in a row in the first round at the tournament.
Uzbek Denis Istomin defeated Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-3, 6-4 and India’s Somdev Devvarman beat American Rhyne Williams 7-5, 6-1.
