Mystery surrounds world no.15 Marin Cilic with reports emanating from his native Croatia that the 24 year-old has tested positive for the use of a banned substance and is currently under investigation by the International Tennis Federation.
According to a report carried in the Croatian daily newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija, Cilic failed a routine anti-doping test at Munich’s BMW Open in April. He reportedly learned of the findings during Wimbledon and pulled out of his second round match with Kenny De Schepper at SW19, citing a knee injury.
Slobodna Dalmacija maintained the use of “reliable sources” in the formation of the story and insisted more details would emerge following the release of Colic’s statement to the ITF.
Reports suggest Cilic’s test was allegedly positive due to “incautious use of glucose”.
Another Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List quoted Cilic’s manager Vincent Stavaux as saying: “There are no comments until we will be able to comment.”
Cilic also split with long-term coach Bob Brett a couple of weeks after the Munich tournament in the build up to the French Open. But he reached the final in his defence of the Aegon Championships at London’s Queen’s Club in June, losing out to eventual Wimbledon winner Andy Murray.
