Gstaad
Singles – Final: (6) M Youzhny def. R Haase 6-3 6-4
Robin Haase’s favorite week finally betrayed him.
Last year, Haase won Kitzbuhel at this time, so he will be falling several more ranking spots. At least he is done defending most of his big points; from now on, he should have a chance to start moving up again.
As Mikhail Youzhny will be doing. We show him rising from #33 to #29. He picks up his first title since Zagreb 2012. And his seventh overall. The only problem is, other than his first, at Rotterdam 2007, they have all been bottom-tier. It’s a nice collection of trophies, but he’ll need to win something bigger to really get his ranking back up.
Doubles – Final: (3) J Murray/Peers def. Andujar/Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-4
Finding the right partner seems to be very important for Jamie Murray. First there was Eric Butorac, in 2007; they won three titles. Murray won only one title in the two years after that. In 2010, he won only one title, with his brother. He had two titles in 2011, but one of those was also with Andy. No titles in 2012. But now, with John Peers, he has two titles in 2013 (the first was Houston). Maybe there is a message in there somewhere.
Umag
Singles – Final: (5) T Robredo def. (3) F Fognini 6-0 6-3
Next to this, even Fabio Fognini’s crazy match of the day before seemed relatively sensible. He lost the first set in eighteen minutes — then broke to start the second. But it’s clear that he had used himself up. It wasn’t much of a final.
Still — two straight titles and a final for Fognini! Surely it will be some consolation that he will rise to a career-high #16. He was philosophical: “It was an incredible week. I go home with a lot of happiness. I’m a little bit disappointed, but even if you’re Roger or Rafa, you’re going to lose some time. I’ve played three incredible weeks and they’re going to stay in my head for the rest of my life.”
Tommy Robredo picks up his second title of the year. And he too will be moving — to #22 or #23. We’re back to four Spaniards in the Top 25 (Ferrer, Nadal, Almagro, Robredo). The Spanish Armada sails again….
Atlanta
Singles – Final: (1) J Isner def. (2) K Anderson 6-7(3-7) 7-6(7-2) 7-6(7-2)
These two do not make it easy to write a story in real time. No one ever really takes a lead.
There were no breaks in the first set. Kevin Anderson didn’t even face a break point. Second set — still no breaks, although Anderson did face his one break point of the match. Then, finally, in game two of the third set, Anderon had triple break point against John Isner — and couldn’t convert. A fourth chance… nope. And so it went, through more than two and a half truly tedious hours and more than forty combined aces. At 6-5 in the third, Anderson had a break point on Isner’s serve. He still couldn’t convert. And again. And so it went to the tiebreak. And Anderson, who had blown eleven break points in the match, suffered a minibreak on the first point. And went downhill from there.
At least John Isner isn’t complaining. After all, he comes away with a title. And the #20 ranking. Whoever won this was going to be #20, and Isner finished just strong enough. It’s his second title of the year, and third in the last twelve months. All 250s, unfortunately for him.
Kitzbuhel
Doubles – First Round: (1) Cermak/Dlouhy def. Brown/Hanley 6-7(4-7) 6-4 10-8
This was, as you can see, the day’s only action other than four qualifying matches. At least any fans who showed up got quite a dramatic show. We may see more of those; the singles draw here isn’t much, but the doubles is pretty good. As is shown by the fact that Brown/Hanley were unseeded.
