Lindsay Davenport, who plays senior doubles with Martina Hingis, says that the Swiss’ decision to play five WTA doubles tournaments this summer is just a way to get her feet wet before coming back in singles again in the fall. . . The La Costa Resort, which hosts the Southern California Open, was sold to Omni Hotels last month opening up the possibility that the WTA tournament won’t move from there next year. . . Roger Federer, who suffered another early round loss when he fell to Daniel Brands in Gstaad, said he’s been struggling with back issues. “I decided after today’s warm-up whether I would play or not,” he said. “I’m happy that I was able to play because I’ve had problems for some time now, already in Hamburg. But it didn’t get worse during today’s match. I’m positive and I felt that it was getting better during the last few days. . . Ryan Harrison has ended partnership with coach Tres Davis. He will be working with USTA coach Jay Berger for at the very least the near future. . . Bethanie Mattek-Sands will not play doubles this summer in order to save wear and tear on her body. . . Southern California Open pullouts include: Marion Bartoli, Kirsten Flipkens, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Kiki Mladenovic and Bojana Jovanovski. . . Wimbledon finalist Taylor Townsend has decided to play the USTA Girls 18s Nationals. She had said at Wimbledon that she would only play the US Open juniors. . . The Paso Robles Sports Club, Paso Robles, California has named Mariano Parris of Argentina as its director of tennis. He was most recently the director of tennis in Key Biscayne, Florida., home of the Sony Open. He also coached the 75th world-ranked player, Camilla Giorgi… The Southern California Open pullouts include: Marion Bartoli, Kirsten Flipkens, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Kiki Mladenovic and Bojana Jovanovski.
