Fifty yards off the Pacific Coast, serious tennis is taking place. Malibu Racquet Club’s head coach, Craig Cignarelli, along with former ATP pro Lester Cook, are running a summer workout for some of America’s elite juniors and college players– think UCLA and Pepperdine. Four hours of strategic drilling and point play dominate the days and the workouts are good enough to attract some pretty solid players. This week, John McEnroe spent five days hitting in with the players. Vika Azarenka and her boyfriend Redfoo came out, and Federer’s coach, Paul Annacone is scheduled to jump in next week. Last week, in preparation for the Newport tournament, Prakash Amritraj stopped by to practice and to talk professionalism with the players. Club manager Trey Waltke is excited about the possibilities for the summer program. “We have access to some of the world’s best coaches and players and our members love having this level at the club. Very few coaches can consistently draw the caliber of players these guys have brought in. I look forward to more of it.” Cignarelli, known for an aggressive stance on American tennis issues, spoke frankly, “Someone has to take the reigns of American tennis so we can make progress against the international community. We damn well intend to take a shot at it.” For information about joining the workouts, contact Lester Cook at lestercook4@gmail.com.
