Gstaad

Singles – Second Round: (2) S Wawrinka def. D Gimeno-Traver 7-5 7-6(7-4)

It isn’t going to be easy for Stanislas Wawrinka to move in the rankings this week; he needs a title. At least, as we shall see, he got some help from Richard Gasquet.

Singles – Second Round: (4) J Monaco def. G Garcia-Lopez 6-1 6-2

Now that it’s too late to save his Top 25 ranking (see today’s Feature), Juan Monaco gets right back on track. But this isn’t even enough to count for him; he needs a title to rise above #30.

Singles – Second Round: (5) F Lopez def. And. Kuznetsov 6-4 6-3

Feliciano Lopez is already counting points, but will probably need more than this to rise in the rankings.

Singles – Second Round: (6) M Youzhny def. P Andujar 6-3 4-6 6-3

Add Mikhail Youzhny to the “No Points Yet” list. Pablo Andujar did better; he had free slots, so just reaching the second round earned him two or three ranking spots and clinched his Top Fifty ranking.

Doubles – First Round: Mergea/Rosol def. (WC) Chiudinelli/Laaksonen 6-2 6-4 .

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Andujar/Garcia-Lopez def. (4) Brown/Hanley 6-3 6-1

Singles – Second Round: A Montanes def. (1) R Gasquet 6-4 6-4

To give Richard Gasquet the greatest possible benefit of the doubt, it’s his first post-grass match on clay, and of course Albert Montanes is always good on the stuff. Still, it’s lousy timing — Gasquet opens the door for Stanislas Wawrinka to pass him and take the #9 ranking. Albert Montanes adds enough points that he should rise to around #45.

Singles – Second Round: (3) F Fognini def. T de Bakker 7-5 6-3

Eleven straight wins for Fabio Fognini, but no movement yet. He needs another final — and he’s bound to run out of gas one of these days. Isn’t he?

Singles – Second Round: (6) M Klizan def. L Mayer 3-6 6-1 7-6(7-3)

Martin Klizan earned this the hard way — it took two and a half hours. But his Top Forty ranking now looks pretty secure.

Singles – Second Round: G Monfils def. B Kavcic 6-3 6-1

Gael Monfils came here at #56, about 60 points away from the Top Fifty. This won’t put him there; we’d guess he’ll need a final. But it certainly looks as if it will happen soon. Especially since he faces Montanes next rather than Gasquet….

Doubles – First Round: (1) Cermak/Dlouhy def. (PR) Hajek/Levinsky 6-2 7-6(7-3)

Too bad Levinsky had to come back against the #1 seeds and with a weak partner. We’ll be interested in seeing how he does after this.

Singles – First Round: M Russell def. (6) M Fish 4-6 6-2 7-5

The sad rule for Mardy Fish in this match seemed to be, “Lead early then struggle.” The match began on Tuesday, and he won the first set, but then, after a rain delay, got into big trouble in the second. When they resumed on Wednesday, he quickly lost the second, but went up an early break in the third — and lost it. He had a chance to break in the eleventh game, and lost that, and was broken. It’s clear what he needs to work on — but it wasn’t too bad for a first match back.

Singles – First Round: (Q) M Ebden def. I Karlovic 6-2, retired

A sad way for Ivo Karlovic to follow up his first title in five years! At least his Top Hundred spot is safe for now.

Singles – First Round: (WC) C Harrison def. A Falla 6-1 6-7(7-9) 6-2

This took more than two hours, and you have to wonder if Alejandro Falla wasn’t a little tired after his final in Bogota. (Note that both Bogota finalists went out in their first match afterward.) Still, it gives us the interesting situation of an event where both Christian and Ryan Harrison are in the second round.

Singles – First Round: J Blake def. T Smyczek 7-6(7-3) 4-6 7-6(7-4)

Tim Smyczek had a break point late in the third set, but couldn’t take it, and that means that he will remain below #100.

Singles – Second Round: (3) I Dodig def. R Berankis 6-1 6-7(3-7) 6-3

Ivan Dodig is already adding points, but not enough to help his ranking. It’s Ricardas Berankis who will be moving — downward. He was last year’s finalist, as a qualifier, so he will fall from #80 to around #110.

Singles – Second Round: (7) L Hewitt def. (WC) R Williams 7-6(8-6) 6-4

The hardcourt season is young, but Lleyton Hewitt has already had two pretty tough matches here. This doesn’t feel like a good omen.

Doubles – First Round: Guccione/Hewitt def. (2) Gonzalez/Lipsky 3-6 7-6(7-2) 10-2

Doubles – First Round: Ram/Skupski def. Inglot/Moser 6-4 6-4

Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)

Leader: Ivo Karlovic — Moved 68 places, from #155 to #87.

Karlovic won Bogota to break a five year title drought.

Runner-Up: Federico Delbonis — Moved 49 places, from #114 to #65

Delbonis made the Hamburg final — and really should have won it.

Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)

Leader: Karlovic, cut ranking 44%

Runner-Up: Delbonis, 43%

Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)

Loser: Thomaz Bellucci — Dropped 43 places, from #70 to #114

Last year at this time, Bellucci won Gstaad.

Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)

Loser: Bellucci, ranking increased 61%.

Ranking Notes

For once, we aren’t going to complain about movement this week. Evidently all the ATP needs is to completely reshuffle the schedule every year to produce rankings changes! Four players rose at least 20%: Karlovic (44%), Delbonis (43%), Bogota finalist Alejandro Falla (32%, to #83), and Hamburg winner Fabio Fognini (24%, to a career-high #19). The next biggest move was by David Goffin, who used a Challenger to get himself back into the Top Hundred; he rose 17% (to #86)

On the down side, Bellucci fell 61%. Last year’s Hamburg champion Juan Monaco lost 50% (to #30). Paul-Henri Mathieu and Thiemo de Bakker both lost their Top Hundred places; Mathieu fell 28% (to #101) and de Bakker 24% (to #108). Also falling more than 20% was Grega Zemlja; he is out of the Top Fifty, having fallen 21% (to #52).
