Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka made a pre-tournament leap of faith as the second seed skydived and produced a quick adrenaline rush before his start of play at the home Suisse Open in Gstaad.
Wawrinka, who had a disappointing Wimbledon and took time off following his first-round loss to Lleyton Hewitt, believes he is ready and refreshed for the week on high-altitude clay.
The parachute leap in tandem with an instructor from 5,000 meters over the alpine village was the second for No. 10 Wawrinka, who had tested his nerve three years ago on a paraglider. “The weather was ideal,” he told Swiss media as he described the sensations of the 50-second jump. “You could not dream of a better landscape. I was a bit nervous flying up, but I did enjoy the moment.
“It was a great experience. Of course, you get very nervous just before jumping off the plane but once you are in the air it’s a great feeling.”
The 28-year-old is playing in Gstaad for the tenth time, with his best result a 2005 final against Gaston Gaudio. He and Roger Federer are heading an all-star Swiss lineup as the top two seeds.
