No Stanford Wildcard For Finalist Vandeweghe, So She Qualifies

CoCo Vandeweghe was upset that she didn’t receive a wild card into Stanford even though she’s American and reached the Stanford final last year. Vandeweghe, who has fallen to No. 245 in the rankings, says that playing World TeamTennis for the Orange County Breakers has helped her pick up her level again. She qualified for Stanford.

She also joked that one of the reasons why she likes to hit with other women is “she’s tired of hitting with her coach Jan-Michael Gambill “when he’s always shirtless.” Vandeweghe and reigning NCAA champion Nicole Gibbs got wildcards into the Stanford doubles. Gibbs was originally supposed to play with Maria Sanchez, who is injured.
