Atlanta

Americans won the only two matches played, with Rhyne Williams beating wild card Denis Kudla 7-5, 6-4 and No. 132 Ryan Harrison earning his first ATP win in more than a month as he reached the second round over Australian Marinko Matosevic 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Gstaad

One possible hurdle for Roger Federer was eliminated when the Swiss player’s Wimbledon conqueror Sergiy Stakhovsky lost in the first round to Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Stakhovsky has now been beaten in four straight matches (including qualifying last week in Hamburg) since upsetting Federer in the second round on grass in London.

Spanish fifth seed Feliciano Lopez got past Czech qualifier Jan Hernych 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, while Russian No. 6 Mikhail Youzhny beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, with that match interrupted in the third set by an afternoon rainstorm. Spain’s Marcel Granollers eliminated Czech seventh seed Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-4.

Federer, whose twins turned four on opening day, is returning to Gstaad for the first time since his 2004 title. Up to 800 seats were added to the stands – all quickly sold out – and publicity posters re-worked to show both Swiss headliners, Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka.

Second seed Wawrinka psyched up for what he hopes is a week to remember, taking his second parachute jump at the weekend over the pristine alpine countryside linked in tandem with an instructor. “You could not dream of a better landscape. I was a bit nervous flying up, but I did enjoy the moment,” said world No. 10.

Federer will be working this week to get more comfortable with his new, larger 98-square-inch racquet which he tried for the first time last week in Hamburg, losing in a semi-final to qualifier Federico Delbonis. The Argentine is also in the Gstaad field in the bottom half of the draw.

Umag

Main draw results were few at this seaside tournament popular with players for its location and party-like off-court atmosphere. While opening day play was mainly dedicated to completing qualifying rounds, two players did advance into the second round on the Croatian clay.

Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker put out Russian veteran Dmitry Tursunov 6-3, 6-3 while Argentine Leonardo Mayer beat Spain’s Albert Ramos 6-1, 6-3.
