Roger Federer will have this week to get it better as the Swiss struggles with a mid-summer racquet change which he hopes will pay winning dividends in just a few weeks at the start of the US Open hard court run-up. The 17-time grand slam champion will test his luck – and his new larger (98 sq.-inch) Wilson frame – on the Gstaad clay, where he last played in 2004, winning the alpine title.
Federer was hit by a weekend semi-final defeat in Hamburg, when he went down to his second straight player ranked outside the ATP top 100, losing 7-6(7), 7-6(4) to No. 114 Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis. That follows his Wimbledon upset in the second round to Sergiy Stakhovsky.
“I’m just still looking for the timing and the rhythm. I tried everything I could at this tournament, but it was a difficult week throughout. I’m happy I fought through many matches. It gives me the matches I was looking for,” said Federer.
Federer, whose only title this season came on the grass of Halle in June, added the two European clay events to his schedule after his Wimbledon surprise. The top seed will begin after a bye in the village of Gstaad, facing the winner from a match between childhood friend Marco Chiudinelli and German Daniel Brands, whom he beat in three sets in his Hamburg start.
Stanislas Wawrinka takes the second seeding as the Swiss plays here for the tenth time, with a 2005 semi-final his best showing on the clay at 800 meters above sea level. The 28-year-old ranked 10th joins Federer with a bye along with third seed Janko Tipsarevic and number four Juan Monaco, making his Gstaad debut.
