Ivo Karlovic was celebrating more than just playing his first final in three years after recovering from viral meningitis in the spring and now, – two months later – winning the clay trophy in Bogota, the former Los Angeles events shifted to South America.
“After all these injuries and illness I was able to get back here,” said the Croatian who fired more than 104 aces during his winning week while claiming victories in all of his 61 service games in the tournament. It was an unbelievable week. It was my weapons, which is volleys and serve and I was more calm in the crucial points.”
Karlovic now owns five titles from eight finals with Bogata his first since winning Nottingham on grass in 2008. The victory will place the one-time No. 14 back into the top 100 after starting last week on 155th. He’s the 11th over-30 this season on the ATP.
