Repercussions from Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon win continue to shake his native Scotland, with four aquarium penguins now named in his family’s honor.
The cuddly quartet of baby female Humboldt penguins at the St Andrews Aquarium in Fife, have been officially named in honor of Andy, his mother Judy, girlfriend Kim and gran Shirley. The naming rights were decided in a public poll held close to the time of Murray’s grand slam title win this month.
“It was a tough decision to pick a winner out of literally hundreds of suggestions, but one theme kept coming through strongly in a lot of the entries,” the aquarium manager told local media. “We had lots of Andy, Murrays and Wimbles but, because the penguins are girls, we had to be a little more creative. It’s a perfect tribute to Andy’s success and he’s welcome to come and visit any time he’s in town.”
Murray might soon be able to start his own zoo, with one of a pair of rare Amur tiger cubs also named after the world No. 2 in recent weeks.
