Bastad
Singles – Final: (1) Serena Williams def. (8) Johanna Larsson 6-4 6-1
We always try to say something interesting about finals, but what can we say here? “Serena wins again”? That’s not a headline; that’s Sunday boilerplate. She does add a few points, but not enough to really matter — she was #1 anyway. The bigger news may be Johanna Larsson, who is now 0-3 in finals — she lost Portoroz 2010 to Anna Chakvetadze and Bastad 2011 to Polona Hercog. Talk about painful — twice losing the final of her home tournament! But at least she has her ranking above #70.
Doubles – Final: (1) Medina Garrigues/Zakopalova def. Dulgheru/Pennetta .6-1 6-4
Is this good news or bad news for Anabel Medina Garrigues?
On the one hand, it’s her third title this year, on three different sufaces; she won Florianopolis with Shvedova and ‘s-Hertogenbosch with Begu. But they’re all bottom-tier events. Medina Garrigues hasn’t won anything bigger than an International since she and Virginia Ruano Pascual won Roland Garros 2009. On the other hand, it’s better than not winning…. For Klara Zakopalova, it’s only doubles title #2, and her first since ‘s-Hertogenbosch 2011. So it’s clearly positive for her, anyway.
Bad Gastein
Singles – Final: Yvonne Meusburger def. Andrea Hlavackova 7-5 6-2
What a run for Yvonne Meusburger! A final last week, now a title this week. The first of her career, in fact. That must feel pretty good for a player whose career is probably in its late phases (she is 29).
It looks as if she’ll be reaching a career high as a result. She came in at #86, and we show her rising to #57 or #58. Her previous best was #60.
Andrea Hlavackova didn’t win her first singles title, but she at least reached her first final, and has risen well above #100. If nothing else, she has spared herself a lot of qualifying matches.
Doubles – Final: Klemenschits/Klepac def. Barrois/Daniilidou 6-1 6-4
Quite a day for Austrians, with Yvonne Meusburger winning the singles and Sandra Klemenschits the doubles. And, as with Meusburger, it’s the first title for Klemenschits, at least at the WTA level; she has a lot of Challenger wins. Given that she’s thirty, she too has reason to feel pretty good. (Too bad her twin sister couldn’t have still been alive for it….) It is also the first WTA title for Andreja Klepac, so a pretty good day for everybody….
