Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) R Federer def. F Mayer 7-6(7-4) 3-6 7-5

Roger Federer really is struggling with that new racquet. This took two hours; we’ll see how much that affects him. It looks as if Florian Mayer will fall another spot or two, but at least he’ll stay Top Fifty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (12) F Fognini def. (2) T Haas 6-2 6-4

It looked, for a very brief moment, as if Fabio Fognini’s amazing hot streak might come to an end. Up a set and a break, he lost the break and let Tommy Haas back into the match. But then he broke again, and served it out — his second win over Haas in two weeks. He’ll rise to at least #21, and he could well make it to #20; a Top Twenty spot is guaranteed if he wins his next match. But Tommy Haas, who was last year’s finalist, will fall from #11 to #12.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) N Almagro def. (5) J Monaco 4-6 6-0 6-3

Just when the points actually started to count… out went defending champion Juan Monaco. That will cost him about a third of his points; he will fall from #20 to no better than #30. Nicolas Almagro has now clinched his Top Fifteen ranking.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (Q) F Delbonis def. (14) F Verdasco 6-7(5-7) 7-6(10-8) 6-4

This may be the best result of Federico Delbonis’s life; he had only one previous semifinal, and that at a weaker event. Unfortunately for him, it took three and a quarter hours. Hard to believe he’ll have anything left for Saturday. He leaves Fernando Verdasco at #33.

Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Peya/Soares def. (3) Marrero/Verdasco walkover

Obviously no surprise after Verdasco’s singles marathon….

Thursday

Singles – Second Round: (1) J Tipsarevic def. R Bemelmans 6-4 7-5

A reasonably efficient start for Janko Tipsarevic — but not very helpful; he is defending finalist points, and needs at least one more win, and very likely two or more, to stay #16.

Singles – Second Round: M Viola def. (4) E Roger-Vasselin 6-3 7-5

This is easily the best result of Matteo Viola’s career. He had eight previous ATP events, and only one win to show for it. Now he has three career wins — although it took him longer than it should have; he was broken the first time he served for the quarterfinal.

Singles – Second Round: V Pospisil def. J Duckworth 7-5 3-6 7-5

Vasek Pospisil faces Viola next, so this looks like a very good chance for a semifinal.

Singles – Second Round: A Falla def. M Ebden 7-6(7-1) 6-1

Matthew Ebden won’t be returning to the Top Hundred at this time.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Cabal/Farah def. Arevalo/Estrella Burgos 4-6 7-6(7-3) 10-8

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Roger-Vasselin/Sijsling def. Mannarino/Viola 7-6(7-0) 3-6 10-2

Quick revenge for Eduard Roger-Vasselin — who incidentally wins his sixth straight doubles match.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Raja/Sharan def. Monroe/Pospisil 3-6 6-3 10-6

File this somewhere under “crazy.” Purav Raja and Divij Sharan have between them all of eleven ATP matches, and four wins — and yet they’re the #4 seeds. On the other hand, they did make the semifinal, so they must be doing something right.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Karlovic/Moser def. Cerretani/Guccione 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-3)

It doesn’t really matter if it’s singles or doubles; Ivo Karlovic just plain likes tiebreaks….

Friday

Singles – Quarterfinal: A Falla def. (1) J Tipsarevic 3-6 6-2 6-3

Janko Tipsarevic never looked very comfortable in this match, and the problem seemed to get worse as the match progressed. Neither guy was doing very well on serve, but Tipsarevic was missing more first serves, and that made the difference. He was defending finalist points, so he will fall from #16 to probably #18.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) K Anderson def. (6) S Giraldo 6-3 6-3

This ought to take Kevin Anderson to at least #21. If he wins his next match, he might hit the Top Twenty; it depends on how Fabio Fognini does.

Singles – Quarterfinal: I Karlovic def. (5) A Mannarino 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-3)

If you want to know the story of this match, consider that the first nine points went to the server! Ivo Karlovic had 22 aces, meaning that more than a quarter of his 87 points were on aces. OK, so what else is new?

Singles – Quarterfinal: V Pospisil def. M Viola 3-6 6-3 6-2

Did Matteo Viola get nervous in the second set? He was, after all, going for his first ATP semifinal. Just reaching his first quarterfinal will probably take him to around #135. (No, that’s not a career high; he made it above #120 for a few weeks this spring.)

Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Roger-Vasselin/Sijsling def. Karlovic/Moser 6-1 7-6(7-3)

Seven straight doubles wins for Eduard Roger-Vasselin, and on two different surfaces. Now he just has to do this at events bigger than a 250….
