Hamburg

Singles – Second Round: (1) (WC) R Federer def. D Brands 3-6 6-3 6-2

Let’s hope this is just a symptom of Roger Federer getting used to his new racquet, not a token of more troubles…. He leaves Daniel Brands still below the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (2) T Haas def. (Q) B Kavcic 6-1 4-6 6-4

There seems to be a near-jinx on high seeds today. Which is worse news for Tommy Haas than for Roger Federer, really, since Haas needs a lot more than this to keep his #11 ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (4) J Janowicz def. R Haase 6-4 3-6 7-6(7-4)

This was the day’s last match, and very likely its most dramatic. The final tiebreak was crazy — five of the first six points went to the returner. Janowicz is defending points from winning the Poznan Challenger last year, but it really looks as if one more win could make him Top Fifteen.

Singles – Second Round: (5) J Monaco def. G Monfils 6-4 6-4

Juan Monaco starts his title defense efficiently; this probably means no Top Fifty spot for Gael Monfils. But Monaco still needs a lot more to stay Top Twenty — indeed, he’s still in danger of losing his Top Thirty spot.

Singles – Second Round: M Granollers def. (6) A Seppi 6-2 1-6 6-1

Marcel Granollers has seen his singles ranking plummet, and he’s struggling in doubles. It seems as if it’s brought him back to life. He costs Andreas Seppi his Top Twenty chance.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) F Delbonis def. (10) T Robredo 6-1 4-6 6-4

This looks more like the Tommy Robredo of a year ago than the one who had been doing so well lately. This means that he won’t be moving significantly in the rankings, up or down.

Singles – Second Round: (11) F Lopez def. (WC) J Struff 7-5 6-3

There is a pretty good chance this will put Feliciano Lopez in the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: (12) F Fognini def. A Ramos 6-1 6-3

Fabio Fognini runs his winning streak to six, making it likely that he will gain at least one more ranking place — but Albert Ramos, who was defending 90 points, will fall several spots.

Singles – Second Round: G Garcia-Lopez def. (13) M Youzhny 6-3 6-7(3-7) 6-2

There goes any chance of Mikhail Youzhny returning to the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: (14) F Verdasco def. R Bautista Agut 6-4 3-6 6-2

This ought to take Fernando Verdasco at least one place higher. It looks as if he has a pretty good shot at #32 in time to earn a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – Second Round: J Hajek (Q) def. (15) E Gulbis 6-4 2-6 6-4

That’s one bit of good news for Roger Federer: He won’t have to face Ernests Gulbis. Gulbis will lose a couple of ranking spots but should stay Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: C Berlocq def. (16) M Klizan 4-6 6-1 7-6(8-6)

As today’s Feature shows, Carlos Berlocq’s ranking just took a flying leap, so this is only a minor upset. Martin Klizan remains at the bottom of the Top Forty; Berlocq is getting close to that level

Doubles – First Round: (1) Granollers/M Lopez def. Chardy/Kubot 6-3 6-3

About time we saw some life from Granollers/Lopez….

Doubles – First Round: (2) Peya/Soares def. (WC) Begemann/Emmrich 7-6(7-3) 6-1

Peya/Soares could get quite close to Granollers and Lopez at #3 this week, but it doesn’t appear they can quite make it. Apart from the fact that Granollers/Lopez are finally winning again.

Doubles – First Round: Bellucci/Paire def. (4) Knowle/Lindstedt 6-3 6-4

Robert Lindstedt had been struggling with Daniel Nestor. Now it looks like he’s just plain struggling.

Doubles – First Round: Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. Hanley/Mertinak 6-2 7-6(7-5)

Fyrstenberg/Matkowski had split up for a few weeks (OK, there was an injury involved, but still, they weren’t playing together.) Maybe it has reinvigorated them.

Bogota

Singles – Second Round: I Karlovic def. (3) I Sijsling 6-3 7-6(16-14)

If there is any question about Ivo Karlovic’s game plan, consider this: He won 76 points. And 24 of those points were aces. Still, he’s playing far better than he was before his long illness — and is rewarded by being the first player to reach the second round.

Singles – Second Round: (6) S Giraldo def. (Q) C Guccione 3-6 6-3 6-4

This immediately followed the Ivo Karlovic match, and for a while it looked as if we were going to see another upset by a big server; Chris Guccione had twelve aces. But he won only 36% of points on second serve, and that was that….

Doubles – First Round: Karlovic/Moser def. (3) Demoliner/Sa 6-4 6-3

Only one ace for Karlovic/Moser, but obviously that wasn’t a major problem….

Doubles – First Round: Monroe/V Pospisil def. de Paula/Galdos 6-1 6-2

Ranking Notes

It was a pretty straightforward week: Our three biggest movers all won titles — in two cases, their first career titles. Mahut, who won his second title, rose 31%; Berlocq, who won his first, rose 28%, and Fabio Fognini, who also won his first, rose 19%, to #25. Our #4 mover was Thiemo de Bakker, up 16% (to #87).

On the down side, Falla fell 34%, last year’s Stuttgart semifinalist Thomaz Bellucci fell 25% (to #70, and it’s going to get worse with Gstaad coming off), and Marcel Granollers fell 24% (to #51). No one else fell as much as 20%.

Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”

These are subjective picks!

An interesting choice. Our three biggest movers all won titles. None is at a career high. Mahut had the biggest move, but his was his second career title. Fognini won his first title, but his move was relatively small. Berlocq’s move was almost as big as Mahut’s, and he won his first title. So we’ll go with Berlocq.
