The Bank of the West Classic at Stanford was hit with a major withdrawal when top seed and attraction Maria Sharapova pulled out with a left hip injury. Sharapova injured her hip after falling in her second round loss to Michelle Larcher de Brito at Wimbledon.
The WTA 700-level tournament still has a deep and respectable field, but was also sting by Serena Williams’ decision not to defend her title. World No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska is the top seed at Stanford. Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli is also still scheduled to play, but Wimbledon semifinalist Kirsten Flipkens and Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki also pulled out.
With the withdrawals, Daniela Hantuchova and Christina McHale received main draw entries and a main draw wildcard was given to former Stanford All-American Mallory Burdette.
Sharapova will return to play at Toronto.
