While Rafael Nadal continued his post-Wimbledon pause, his uncle and coach Toni Nadal has been on the road, giving a coaching talk and clinic at the Stuttgart ATP event last week. But differences between coach and pupil appear to have emerged in the wake of Nadal’s first-round Wimbledon loss to Belgian Steve Darcis.
It’s the status of Nadal’s actual workout which seems to be in conflict: Toni says his nephew is saving his less-than-perfect left knee and not doing any court work. Nadal says the opposite and has posted pictures to his Facebook page appearing to show post-training sessions on the clay at home in Mallorca.
“Rafa will come back. He has no fear of this break – he has nothing more to lose. Currently Rafa is doing physical training, but no court workouts. The break is important – he has played enough,” Toni Nadal said in Germany.
A Rafa Facebook post indicated that he was back in at least some light training and had been practicing at home. Whatever the case, the true result will be known in three weeks when the tennis elite are all entered in the Montreal Masters, first of the two major run-ups to the US Open.
