Budapest
Singles – Final: (3) Simona Halep def. Yvonne Meusburger 6-3 6-7(7-9) 6-1
Maybe they should just hand Simona Halep all the International titles for the rest of the year and save time. In five weeks, she has won three titles on two different surfaces: Nurnberg (clay), ‘s-Hertogenbosch (grass), and now this! She was #58 when that run started. With this, we show her up to #23. And, we suspect, not yet done. We’ll have to see how she does on hardcourt, but if she can maintain anything close to this pace, she’s going to be Top Twenty. Astonishing.
Singles – Final: (1) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Bratchikova/Tatishvili 6-4 6-1
On their list of career accomplishments, this probably belongs at the very bottom of the list for Hlavackova/Hradecka. But it’s a title! It has been a long, long while — their last one was back at Luxembourg 2012. And they have Cincinnati to defend in about a month. They have been sliding in the rankings. This by itself isn’t going to help appreciably. But they are finally out of their funk.
Palermo
Singles – Final: (2) Roberta Vinci def. (1) (WC) Sara Errani 6-3 3-6 6-3
The last five years have been the heyday of Italian women’s tennis. Flavia Pennetta, Francesca Schiavone, Sara Errani — only in the last half decade have we had Italian women in the Top Ten.
Could Roberta Vinci be the next?
This alone won’t get her there; she is still stuck at #11. But she is getting closer. She’s now about 400 points off the pace. She certainly earned her second title of the year (following Katowice in April) — this took more than two hours, and the games averaged eight points each. Errani earned ten breaks, Vinci twelve! And she’s truly giving it all she has — this is her seventeenth event of the year; she has a 33-15 record. That’s actually more wins than Victoria Azarenka (28), and only four fewer than Maria Sharapova (37).
Like Vinci, Sara Errani had no chance to move this week; she remains #6. She may not have defended her title, but it’s not a bad place to be. Especially considering that she is also #1 in doubles.
