Maria Sharapova has taken action after her worst grand slam showing since the 2010 Australian Open as the world No. 2 announced an immediate split with Swedish coach Thomas Hogstedt.
The Russian made her announcement on Facebook after a fortnight of silence following her second-round exit from Wimbledon at the hands of Portugal’s Michelle Larcher di Brito.
“After almost 3 years of working together, Thomas Hogstedt and I decided to part ways. Due to personal issues, he was not able to travel in the near future and we both agreed it was the right time to move our separate ways.
“I am very thankful for all his work, and wish him much success in the future. I will be announcing my new coach in a few days. Very excited!”
Sharapova only recently ended a brief holiday which included Stockholm and Mexico, with conspiracy theorists suggesting that something might not be right in the Sharapova camp, since Bulgarian boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov did not join her and was not mentioned at all in tweets.
During Wimbledon, British commentator Annabel Croft said that she believed Sharapova lost early due to the fact that she is in love, a comment which drew various reactions – but none from four-time grand slam champion Sharapova herself.
