Bastad

Singles – Second Round: (1) T Berdych def. M Alund 6-3 6-0

A nice bounce-back from a rather disappointing Wimbledon for Tomas Berdych, but he still needs two more wins to affect his point total.

Singles – Second Round: (2) N Almagro def. G Garcia-Lopez 3-6 6-1 6-1

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez was a semifinalist last year, so this will cost him several ranking spots. Nicolas Almagro could hit the Top Fifteen here, but he needs a final.

Singles – Second Round: T de Bakker def. (6) V Troicki 6-4 4-6 7-6(8-6)

Maybe all Viktor Troicki’s troubles are starting to get to him. He had four match points here and couldn’t convert. Which appears to mean that he will stay below the Top Fifty. It looks as if Thiemo de Bakker will be returning to the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: (8) F Verdasco def. J Struff 6-1 7-5

Fernando Verdasco still needs one more win to defend his points, but this appears to clinch his newly-regained Top Forty ranking.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Monroe/Stadler def. (1) Lindstedt/Nestor 6-4 6-3

Daniel Nestor just won the Wimbledon mixed, but in men’s doubles, he continues to really struggle. Will Lindstedt/Nestor even stay together to the end of the year? We’re starting to wonder.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Berlocq/Ramos def. (2) Marrero/Verdasco 3-6 7-6(7-3) 10-4

More reason to think Marrero/Verdasco should have played Wimbledon rather than here….

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Brunstrom/Klaasen def. Hajek/Polasek 6-4 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Arnold Ker/Monaco def. Alund/Souza 6-3 6-2

This really is good to see for Lucas Arnold Ker. Now he just has to stay healthy….

Stuttgart

Singles – Second Round: (1) T Haas def. E Gulbis 6-0 3-6 6-4

This was expected to be the best match of the second round, and after a dull first set, it delivered. Ernests Gulbis stays stuck around #35; Tommy Haas needs two more wins for the points to start counting — and can’t rise above #11 no matter what.

Singles – Second Round: (4) B Paire def. N Davydenko 6-3 6-1

More evidence that Nikolay Davydenko just isn’t the player he once was. He’ll remain below #40. Benoit Paire is already adding points, but he needs a final to rise in the rankings.

Singles – Second Round: (5) F Fognini def. L Mayer 6-1 6-3

Fabio Fognini looks likely to return to the Top Thirty; one more win would clinch it.

Singles – Second Round: V Hanescu def. T Bellucci 6-1 6-4

Thomaz Bellucci posted an upset in his first match back from injury, but it looks as if he perhaps still needs to work on his fitness a little. There is a good chance that Victor Hanescu will be hitting the Top Fifty.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Brown/Hanley def. Mergea/Rosol 6-4 3-6 10-7

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Bagnis/Bellucci def. (WC) Haas/Kern 6-2 7-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Beck/Berrer def. Siljestrom/Zelenay 6-7(3-7) 6-4 10-6

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Bednarek/Kowalczyk def. Dlouhy/Klizan 7-6(7-5) 3-6 10-4

Newport

Singles – Quarterfinal: M Russell def. (3) I Sijsling 7-6(7-3) 6-7(6-8) 7-6(7-5)

Michael Russell served for this match in the second set — and blew it. He ended up spending more than two and a half hours on the court. It will be interesting to see what that costs him in the later rounds — it may already have cost him in doubles. It probably costs Igor Sijsling his Top Fifty chance.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (WC) N Mahut def. M Przysiezny 7-6(7-5) 6-4

Nicolas Mahut is turning into the most grass-specialized player on the ATP. He isn’t quite Top Hundred yet, but it looks as if he might make it here. One more win would do it.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Demoliner/Sa def. Guccione/Hewitt 4-6 6-3 10-5

This was supposed to take place on Wednesday, but the other matches ran too late. Just as well, perhaps, since Lleyton Hewitt still has the singles to worry about.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Karlovic/Sharan def. Shamasdin/Smith 6-4 4-6 19-17

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Smyczek/Williams def. Kudla/Russell 6-2 6-3
