Andy Murray is slowly getting adjusted to his new status as a Wimbledon champion. But the Scot is unlikely to make any changes in his lifestyle or behavior after making tennis history for Britain.
“I just know that I will never top that,” he told the BBC after beating Novak Djokovic to become the first British man in 77 years to lift the trophy. “Whatever I do know, I won’t have that same pressure, that same expectation, that same, I don’t know, release after the match.”
Murray said that while he was hyped up after making his grand slam title breakthrough at the US Open last year, after winning Wimbledon, he was just plain beat. “After I finished the US Open, I couldn’t sleep for two days and I wasn’t tired. At Wimbledon, I came off the court and within 45 minutes I was spent.
“I couldn’t move, I was so tired. Subconsciously, everything that goes on with Wimbledon and almost like the last seven or eight years of the pressure, the questions, and the build-up of all that stuff took its toll after the match.”
Amidst the waves on congratulatory texts, emails and Twitter messages, Murray is managing to keep his feet on the ground. He has no real vices, so celebrations remained low-key – limited to sushi in Mayfair with friends and family – after the biggest win of his career.
“I’m not like addicted to going out or drinking or smoking. I don’t do any of that sort of stuff,” he told London’s Telegraph. “I enjoy being around my friends, I enjoy training. I enjoy being over in Miami. I don’t think I will get sidetracked but you never know.
“It comes down to the people you surround yourself with. If they are the right people you won’t get yourself in those situations. And people who are honest with you will tell you if you are acting out of line, or not working properly or you’re doing the wrong things. I believe I have the right people to stop me doing anything like that. So I don’t see it happening.”
