New Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has revealed he is prepared to make his political stance when necessary and will enter the debate on Scottish independence.

Murray insisted now is not the right moment to make any proclamation on the referendum set to be staged in September 2014, asking “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

The 26 year-old from Dunblane said he would canvass opinion and could declare his stance ahead of the vote.

“When the time is right I will probably say something about it,” said Murray. “I’m going to get asked about it all the time. I will think about it, speak to some people and try to see what is best for the country.”

Murray, if he declares his stance, would become the latest famous Scot to come out for or against on the issue.

Former Manchester United football manager Sir Alex Ferguson, a supporter of Murray during his US Open final triumph last September and a Royal Box attendee during Wimbledon, has already donated to the Better Together anti-independence campaign.

But the mood is split between Murray’s high profile fans. Sean Connery, another of the Flushing Meadows support squad last year, is undoubtedly the Scottish National Party’s best-known celebrity supporter, while Hollywood actor Brian Cox (the first man to portray Hannibal Lecter in the 1986 movie Manhunter and Dr. Guggenheim in Rushmore) is another backer of independence.

Hollywood actor Alan Cumming (Eyes Wide Shut, X-Men 2 and GoldenEye)  and has always been a high-profile supporter of the Yes Scotland organisation, along with the actor Martin Compston (True North and Red Road).

Supporters of the No Campaign include actor Ewan McGregor (no.36 on Empire magazine’s ‘Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time), comedian Billy Connolly, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie and singer Sharleen Spiteri, of the band Texas.

However, Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy faced online abuse earlier this year after saying that independence would weaken the British team and, with a lack of adequate facilities north of the Border, would create a challenge for Scotland’s new national athletes.
