Wimbledon Men’s Finals Was A TV Favorite

Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon title set records for viewership on the BBC as the British public thronged to the same Wimbledon final shunned by audiences in the US.

Up to a quarter of the British population was glued to the match, which ended a 77-year men’s title search for another home winner at the All England club.

BBC figures show that viewership peaked at 17.3 million viewers – one in every four Britons, or, more precisely, 27 per cent of the public. It was the highest rating for a Wimbledon final since 1990.

Figures were improved on the 2012 set, when Murray lost a tearful final to Roger Federer. That match drew a still-respectable peak of 16.9 million.

By contrast, ESPN in the US reported the final drew a measly 2.0 share of the available audience, down from 3.1 a year ago when Federer was part of the action on court.
