After making British tennis history by ending the 77-year drought for a men’s singles champion, London media are tipping that Andy Murray is set for a knighthood sooner rather than later – even at the relatively tender age of 26.
Murray has vaulted into the pantheon of national sport after his three-set defeat of Novak Djokovic at the weekend to finally end the long wait since Fred Perry last did it in 1936.
Murray got his first gong, a relative minor OBE (Order of the British Empire) after winning his London Olympic gold medal last summer. While many public figures usually wait around four years before being honored, Murray might well be fast-tracked.
The Daily Mail quoted deep sources as saying there was no “hard and fast rule” on the procedure. “If you look at Bradley Wiggins, it’s a fairly safe bet that Andy Murray is going to be recommended for a knighthood.”
