Vic Seixas, Hall of Famer from Philadelphia, was in London last week as a visitor of Wimbledon recognizing his singles victory 60 years ago over Kurt Nielsen of Denmark, 9-7, 6-3, 6-4.
A number of years ago, Seixas related to Daily Tennis News that following his victory at Wimbledon, his father proudly placed Vic’s Wimbledon trophy in the window of his hardware store. Vic beamed at the trophy when a customer came in and asked Vic what the trophy was.
Vic modestly responded that it was a trophy for a tournament he won in London. The customer responded, “Gee, that is a long way to go to play tennis. Couldn’t you have just played somewhere in Pennsylvania?”
