Serena Williams was long gone from Wimbledon early in the second week when the holder was dispatched by eventual finalist Sabine Lisicki, But British media report that it’s a sure thing that the millionaire queen of swag made off with more than a small share of pricey Wimbledon towels.
Reports indicate that the Williams sisters have been known for years to cram as many of the 28 sterling ($45) multicolored towels as possible into their racquet bags – even at the start of a match.
The younger Williams – her sister Venus did not play this year and is out for the next month of TeamTennis with continuing back problems – is believed to have acquired a rather large, free collection.
While Wimbledon officials found the nerve to tell Roger Federer that his orange-soled shoes were distracting and not in keeping with the club’s all-white clothing policy, no one came up to Williams to make the same suggestion about her large orange knickers, rather much larger than the soles of Federer’s shoes.
The same reticence seems to apply to the towel situation with a Wimbledon spokesman saying: “The players are requested to give the towels back but they can keep them if they want to.”
Some suggest that Serena has made off with up to eight towels in a match, surely contributing to a large collection of white good at one or more of her homes.
