Wimbledon

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (7) T Berdych 7-6(7-5) 6-4 6-3

Tomas Berdych really should have won this, or at least made it last a lot longer. He certainly had his chances — he had a 3-0 lead in the second set. And he played a horrid first set tiebreak. Down two sets to none, the third set went fast. There isn’t much to say except that Berdych blows another chance to rise above #6. He might fall lower. Roger Federer is safe at #5 — though one suspects that is small consolation to Federer….

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) A Murray def. F Verdasco 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-4 7-5

It took Andy Murray two full sets to get into this, but once he did, look out! He leaves Fernando Verdasco at #35 — which is still quite promising given where he was a month ago.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) J del Potro def. (4) D Ferrer 6-2 6-4 7-6(7-5)

It must have been maddening: The day’s first matches on Centre and #1 ended within a minute of each other — no way to watch the climax of both. This is another of those matches David Ferrer will be a long time forgetting. Juan Martin del Potro came in with a hyperextended knee, and he hurt it again in the very first game — but, somehow, del Potro kept firing his artillery, and Ferrer couldn’t make him move, and del Potro came through. Del Potro needs one more win to reach #6, which is as high as he can go this week. Ferrer will rise to #3, but he loses his shot at #2; Andy Murray has now clinched that spot.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (24) J Janowicz def. L Kubot 7-5 6-4 6-4

About what everyone expected, but still, it’s the best result of Jerzy Janowicz’s career; he should reach a career-high #17. He is the first Polish man to reach a Slam semifinal.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (12) Dodig/Melo def. Blake/Melzer 7-5 6-0 6-7(0-7) 6-4

Marcelo Melo was defending quarterfinalist points, so he’s only now starting to move. He needs one more win to hit the Top Fifteen. We currently estimate the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….13180

1..(1) Bryan………….13180

3..(3) Lopez…………..5550

4..(4) Granollers………5550

5.(10) Bopanna…………5380

6..(7) Bhupathi………..5225

7..(6) Soares………….5080

8..(9) Peya……………5000

9.(11) Paes……………4720

10.(14) Stepanek………..4445

Mixed Doubles – Third Round: (1) Soares/Raymond def. Nielsen/Arvidsson 6-3 6-4

Last year’s Wimbledon was the most memorable event of Frederik Nielsen’s career, but this year’s certainly wasn’t much to remember. With his men’s doubles ranking going down the tubes, it will be interesting to see if he can even get entry into the U. S. Open mixed….

Mixed Doubles – Third Round: (2) Tecau/Mirza def. Butorac/Cornet 6-1 7-5

Horia Tecau came in as a Top Ten men’s doubles player, but will be falling. Historically, his Mixed results haven’t been much. Ironic that he will be rising in Mixed even as he skids in Men’s.

Mixed Doubles – Third Round: (3) Zimonjic/Srebotnik def. (13) Lipsky/Dellacqua 6-2 6-7(3-7) 6-2

It’s probably not much consolation for her ordinary doubles loss, but Katarina Srebotnik can at least say she made the quarterfinals in both women’s doubles and mixed.

Mixed Doubles – Third Round: Peers/Barty def. (6) Melo/Huber 6-4 1-6 6-2

Liezel Huber is really slumping, but given that she was playing with a strong partner, and Ashleigh Barty wasn’t, this looks like more evidence of Barty’s doubles skills.

Mixed Doubles – Third Round: (11) Matkowski/Peschke def. (5) Peya/Groenefeld 6-7(3-7) 6-4 6-2

This is interesting on two counts, first, because Kveta Peschke beat her doubles partner Groenefeld, and second, because Mixed rankings would have demoted Peya/Groenefeld to unseeded while promoting Matkowski/Peschke to #3. So this definitely followed the Mixed rankings. It also probably tells us who is the stronger half of Peschke/Groenefeld….

Mixed Doubles – Third Round: (7) Bopanna/Zheng def. Brunstrom/Marosi 7-6(7-4) 3-6 6-1

It’s turning into a pretty good Wimbledon for Rohan Bopanna, who is still around in both men’s and mixed doubles.

Mixed Doubles – Third Round: (8) Nestor/Mladenovic def. (10) Qureshi/Black 3-6 6-3 6-2

This doesn’t tell us much about Mixed rankings — the Mixed standings would have promoted each of these teams by two spots!

Mixed Doubles – Third Round: Rojer/Dushevina def. (14) Marrero/Date-Krumm 6-7(4-7) 7-6(7-3) 7-5

Wimbledon

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (12) Barty/Dellacqua def. (2) Hlavackova/Hradecka 2-6 6-2 6-4

That’s the second Slam semifinal this year for Barty/Dellacqua. Ashleigh Barty really does seem like she has a bright doubles future ahead of her. It’s costly to Hlavackova/Hradecka, who were finalists last year. They fall from #4 and #7 to no better than #7 and #8.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Groenefeld/Peschke def. (3) Petrova/Srebotnik 7-6(7-2) 6-3

Slams and Nadia Petrova just don’t mix. Not only could she have taken home a trophy here, she could have taken the #1 ranking. Not now. Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci will retain the top spots. Petrova will be #3, Srebotnik seemingly #5. Kveta Peschke has a good shot at a return to the Top Ten.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (8) Hsieh/Peng def. Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni 6-4 7-5

Jelena Jankovic and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni have a good mix of tools, which is presumably why they post so many upsets. But neither is a natural doubles player, and Hsieh/Peng know how to work together. Hsieh Su-Wei is making a genuine Top Ten push; Peng Shuai isn’t too far behind. We currently estimate the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….9355

1..(1) VINCI …………. 9355

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7730

4..(5) MAKAROVA ………..6780

5..(8) SREBOTNIK ……… 6745

6..(6) VESNINA ……….. 6631

8..(7) HRADECKA ………..5886

9.(17) PESCHKE ……….. 4295*

10.(16) HSIEH …………. 4285*

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Aoyama/Scheepers def. (16) Goerges/Zahlavova Strycova 7-6(8-6) 5-7 6-4

The doubles draw here is perhaps not quite as crazy as the singles draw, but it’s certainly working on it…. This will almost certainly be the biggest result of Shuko Aoyama’s career.
