Serena Williams is widely regarded as one of the greatest women players in the history of tennis but throughout her career there have been many questions over her commitment to the sport. There was no doubt about how devastated the world no.1 and defending champion felt after her shock Wimbledon fourth round loss to German Sabine Lisicki when she maintained: “I probably couldn’t be more disappointed.”

Williams, a 16-time Grand Slam champion, was left shell-shocked by her 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 exit following a career-best 34-match winning streak. She was amazed by the amount of uncharacteristic caution she employed and said: “Maybe I backed off a little bit at some points.

“Going forward, if I want to be successful, if I plan on being successful, I’m never going to do it backing off. I have to play the game I can play. For me that’s being more aggressive. I just definitely feel like I could have went for it a little more on some of the shots.”

In a Wimbledon brimful of shocks, such as the early exits of fellow former champions such as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova, the way Williams dropped the last four games against 23rd seed Lisicki was regarded as the most amazing.

But Williams insisted: “It’s definitely not a shock. I just need to do better. Sabine plays really good on grass. She has a massive, massive serve, so going in there you have to know that it’s definitely not going to be an easy match playing her at Wimbledon, especially on Centre Court.

“However I felt that I was on the verge of winning. I felt really good and really confident. At that point I just was physically unable to hold serve.”

Now Williams is keen to quickly banish the memory of her defeat and intends to play the Swedish Open clay-court event in Bastad, beginning on July 15. Then the focus switches to North American for the US Open Series but Williams not scheduled to play until the Rogers Cup, which beings on August 5 in Toronto.
