Wimbledon
Singles – Third Round: (1) N Djokovic def. (28) J Chardy 6-3 6-2 6-2
Novak Djokovic didn’t make an error in the first two sets of this. Amazing it was as close as it was…. Jeremy Chardy, even though he added points, will be falling out of the Top 25.
Singles – Third Round: (4) D Ferrer def. (26) A Dolgopolov 6-7(6-8) 7-6(7-2) 2-6 6-1 6-2
David Ferrer looked like he might be the latest victim of the slippery grass. He was worrying about his ankle — but of course he never, ever gives up. And it paid off. He will have almost a 400 point on Rafael Nadal in the contest for #3. He’s within 500 points of #2 Andy Murray. Alexandr Dolgopolov remains below the Top Twenty.
Singles – Third Round: (7) T Berdych def. (27) K Anderson 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5
Tomas Berdych has been to the Wimbledon final. And here’s a scary thought: If he can do it again, he’ll be within a hundred points of Roger Federer in the contest for #5. A title wou;d make Berdych #5. Is it actually possible that Federer could fall to #6 this summer?
Singles – Third Round: (8) J del Potro def. G Zemlja 7-5 7-6(7-3) 6-0
Had Grega Zemlja won this, he would have been Top Fifty. This means he will fall just short. It’s still turning into the best year of his career. The strange part, given that scoreline, is that it’s Juan Martin del Potro who says he is hurting; he slipped on the grass in the final set, had the trainer out, and will be having a doctor look at his left ankle and knee.
Singles – Third Round: B Tomic def. (9) R Gasquet 7-6(9-7) 5-7 7-5 7-6(7-5)
Bernard Tomic has been trying to get his father permission to attend Wimbledon. Maybe he should forget that. He’s doing just fine on his own! He’s now just a little below the Top Forty and looking strong. Richard Gasquet will certainly stay Top Ten, and probably #9, but he loses his chance to pass Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and become the #1 Frenchman.
Singles – Third Round: (23) A Seppi def. (12) K Nishikori 3-6 6-2 6-7(4-7) 6-1 6-4
There can’t be many Italians who wish there were more grass events, but Andreas Seppi is surely one. It’s even better for him than is clay. This should put him in the Top 25. But Kei Nishikori loses his Top Ten chance; he will fall from #11 to no better (although probably no worse than) than #12.
Singles – Third Round: (13) T Haas def. F Lopez 4-6 6-2 7-5 6-4
With Kei Nishikori out, Tommy Haas is now almost sure to rise to #11; two more wins would make him Top Ten. Feliciano Lopez will almost certainly be #30 or #31.
Singles – Third Round: (20) M Youzhny def. V Troicki 6-3 6-4 7-5
Viktor Troicki made the fourth round last year, so this will cost him his Top Fifty spot. The flip side is, he finally seems to be playing well again, so it may be a brief exile.
Singles – Third Round: K de Schepper def. (22) J Monaco 6-4 7-6(10-8) 6-4
Now this is more like the Juan Monaco we’ve always known: The one who hates grass. This should have been a chance to rise to #18, but he won’t do it now. Kenny de Schepper will probably make a career high.
Singles – Third Round: L Kubot def. (25) B Paire 6-1 6-3 6-4
Benoit Paire succeeded in defending his points, but he will fall at least one ranking spot even so.
Singles – Third Round: F Verdasco def. E Gulbis 6-2 6-4 6-4
This will put Fernando Verdasco back in the Top Fifty — probably around #43. Ernests Gulbis will again fall short of the Top Thirty; he’ll probably be #35 or #36.
Singles – Third Round: I Dodig def. I Sijsling 6-0 6-1 1-0, retired
No question now: Ivan Dodig is Top Forty. He’ll likely be around #36. Igor Sijsling will be a little below #55. He is listed as the thirteenth player to pull out here, which is considered to match the record. Interestingly, two of the players who retired did so against Dodig, which has to be close to matching a record too.
Doubles – Second Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Marrero/Seppi 6-3 7-5 6-4
Too bad for David Marrero that Fernando Verdasco didn’t want to play; they would have been seeded, meaning no need to face the Bryans yet. There is a chance this will cost Marrero his Top Fifteen ranking. The Bryans, of course, maintain their top spots; we currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) Bryan………….12640
1..(1) Bryan………….12640
3..(3) Lopez…………..5550
4..(4) Granollers………5550
5..(6) Soares………….5080
6..(7) Bhupathi………..5045
7..(9) Peya……………5000
8.(10) Bopanna…………4840
9..(5) Lindstedt……….4240
10.(11) Paes……………4180
Doubles – Second Round: (3) Peya/Soares def. Hanley/Smith 4-6 6-1 6-7(6-8) 7-5 10-8
Scary for Peya/Soares, but they keep alive their hopes of rising to #3 and #4.
Doubles – Second Round: (4) Paes/Stepanek def. Delgado/Ebden 6-4 6-4 6-3
A boost to Leander Paes’s Top Ten hopes, but it’s still too soon for it to be certain…
Doubles – Second Round: (5) Qureshi/Rojer def. Malisse/Skupski 6-3 6-7(1-7) 6-3 6-7(5-7) 8-6
… especially since Qureshi/Rojer remain right on Paes’s tail.
Doubles – Second Round: (7) Mirnyi/Tecau def. Groth/Guccione 6-4 6-7(6-8) 7-6(7-2) 7-5
Another struggle for Mirnyi/Tecau, and Horia Tecau is still only #14 in safe points. This is too much like Russian Roulette for comfort.
Doubles – Second Round: (8) Bhupathi/Knowle def. Monroe/Stadler 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-2
Mahesh Bhupathi keeps himself in the hunt for a Top Five spot — he could go as high as #3 here.
Doubles – Second Round: (9) Fleming/Marray def. Cermak/Mertinak 6-3 6-4 7-6(9-7)
Even with this win, Jonathan Marray is about a thousand points below the Top Twenty in safe points. But at least he’s winning, unlike his 2012 partner Nielsen.
Doubles – Second Round: Levine/Pospisil def. (10) S Gonzalez/Lipsky 4-6 7-6(7-3) 6-4 3-6 6-3
Doubles – Second Round: (11) Benneteau/Zimonjic def. Dimitrov/Nielsen 6-7(3-7) 6-3 5-7 6-2 8-6
“Thud!” goes the defending champion. That was more than half of Frederik Nielsen’s points. He came in at #17. It appears he will be a little below #40 after this.
Doubles – Second Round: (14) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin def. Brands/Rosol 6-3 5-7 7-6(7-4) 6-7(8-10) 6-4
Rohan Bopanna may be regretting his choice of partner. He will almost certainly stay Top Ten, but it’s going to be tough to rise above #8 if he’s having this much trouble.
Doubles – Second Round: (15) Kubot/Matkowski def. Matkowski/Moser 2-6 4-6 6-2 6-2 6-1
Doubles – Second Round: Blake/Melzer def. J Murray/Peers 3-6 6-3 6-4 3-6 14-12
We might see a closer match in Davis Cup, but in all likelihood this will be, in terms of games, the longest doubles match of the year. Interesting that James Blake, who has so much trouble in five-set singles matches, managed to win a match that was the equivalent of six sets long….
Doubles – Second Round: Huey/Inglot def. Begemann/Emmrich 6-3 6-7(2-2) 7-5 7-6(7-3)
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Blake/Vekic def. Levinsky/Dekmeijere 6-4 6-1
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Butorac/Cornet def. Mertinak/Uhlirova 6-4 3-6 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Brunstrom/Marosi def. Cerretani/Barthel 3-6 6-3 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Emmrich/Goerges def. Cabal/Jovanovski 7-5 6-2
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Farah/Jurak def. Hanley/H Chan 6-2 6-4
It’s hard to believe Paul Hanley will be able to tour much longer if he keeps posting results like these.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Fognini/Pennetta def. Delgado/Moore 7-6(7-2) 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Inglot/Konta def. Almagro/Torro-Flor 4-6 6-3 19-17
An hour and 47 minutes for the third set. 26 aces for Inglot/Konta. When was the last time you saw that many aces in a mixed match? We certainly have no clue….
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Marray/Watson def. Haase/Rosolska 6-3 7-5
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Peers/Barty def. Knowle/Zhang 6-7(7-9) 6-3 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: A Ram/Spears def. Bracciali/Voskoboeva 6-4 6-7(6-8) 6-2
There was a time, years ago, when Andy Ram was the best male Mixed player in the world. He’s fallen hard, but maybe a little of it showed here.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: R Ram/Schiavone def. Klaasen/Rodionova 7-6(8-6) 4-6 6-4
