Wimbledon
Singles – Third Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-2 6-0
This was the day’s last match, and it got moved to Centre because they were worried about failing light. They didn’t really need to bother — it took only 61 minutes. Serena of course keeps building her lead in the #1 contest. She’s getting close to clinching the year-end top spot.
Singles – Third Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Madison Keys 7-5 4-6 6-3
A fair scare for Agnieszka Radwanska, considering that Li Na remains on her tail in the contest for #4. But Radwanska still leads. She leaves Madison Keys around #45.
Singles – Third Round: (6) Li Na def. (32) Klara Zakopalova 4-6 6-0 8-6
It’s now a straight-up contest between Radwanska and Li Na for #4. Whichever lasts longer is #4, with ties to Radwanska. And they both appear to be about equally tired…. Klara Zakopalova remains a little below #40.
Singles – Third Round: (8) Petra Kvitova def. (25) Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 2-6 6-3
This was a very, very Petra Kvitova-esque match: Sometimes she was there, sometimes she wasn’t. She looked as if she was in big trouble in the third set. But that was Friday. Then it rained. When they resumed, Good Kvitova took the court — and blocked Ekaterina Makarova’s Top Twenty hopes. Makarova will at least rise above #25.
Singles – Third Round: (11) Roberta Vinci def. (18) Dominika Cibulkova 6-1 6-4
This made it definite: Maria Kirilenko is out of the Top Ten. It is not yet certain whether Roberta Vinci will be the one to replace her, however. Dominika Cibulkova will not rise above her current #19.
Singles – Third Round: (23) Sabine Lisicki def. (14) Samantha Stosur 4-6 6-2 6-1
Sabine Lisicki was having some sort of problem with her hand in the early going of this, eventually calling for the trainer. Samantha Stosur tried to respond by playing more aggressively. But Lisicki raised her game, and Stosur had no answer. She loses her chance for a Top Ten spot; that will probably go either to Roberta Vinci or Marion Bartoli. Lisicki still needs one more win to defend her points and stay Top Thirty.
Singles – Third Round: (17) Sloane Stephens def. Petra Cetkovska 7-6(7-3) 0-6 6-4
It almost seems as if Sloane Stephens can only win at Slams. Of course, if you have to pick one place to win, that’s the one…. If she can win her next match, she’ll be Top Fifteen.
Singles – Third Round: Kaia Kanepi def. Alison Riske 6-2 6-3
It was the best Slam of Alison Riske’s career, but Kaia Kanepi should have been seeded here…. The Estonian probably will be seeded at the U. S. Open; this might take her as high as #32.
Singles – Third Round: Laura Robson def. Marina Erakovic 1-6 7-5 6-3
Laura Robson was down 5-3 in the second set. Then — eight games in a row. It was amazing in more ways than one. With the win, Robson is Top Thirty. This might even be enough to put her in the Top 25.
Singles – Third Round: Monica Puig def. Eva Birnerova 4-6 6-3 6-4
Quite a breakthrough event for Monica Puig, who is on the verge of the Top Fifty.
Singles – Third Round: Tsvetana Pironkova def. Petra Martic 6-1 4-6 6-2
Yet again grass brings out the best in Tsvetana Pironkova. She should rise above #60.
Doubles – Second Round: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Lepchenko/S Zheng 7-5 6-3
Nadia Petrova keeps her hopes for #1 alive. She needs a title, plus cooperation from Errani/Vinci, though.
Doubles – Second Round: (4) Makarova/Vesnina def. McHale/Paszek 7-6(10-8) 6-1
Makarova/Vesnina still have points to defend, but they remain in the hunt for Top Five spots.
Doubles – Second Round: (6) Huber/Mirza def. Pennetta/Petkovic 7-6(8-6) 3-6 6-2
Another disturbing sign for Liezel Huber, given that this is probably the best surface for Huber/Mirza and the worst for Pennetta/Petkovic.
Doubles – Second Round: (7) Groenefeld/Peschke def. Raymond/Robson 6-4 6-4
Lisa Raymond will definitely lose the #9 ranking, and she will lose her Top Ten spot if Kops-Jones/Spears win their next match. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) ERRANI ………….9355*
1..(1) VINCI …………. 9355*
3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7625*
4..(5) MAKAROVA ………..6780*
5..(6) VESNINA ……….. 6631*
6..(8) SREBOTNIK ……… 6565*
7..(4) HLAVACKOVA ………6220*
8..(7) HRADECKA ………..5666*
9.(14) MLADENOVIC ………3840
10..(9) RAYMOND ……….. 3815
Doubles – Second Round: (8) Hsieh/Peng def. Foretz Gacon/Hrdinova 4-6 6-3 6-4
Doubles – Second Round: Bouchard/Martic def. (11) Black/Erakovic 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-4)
On grass this happens? One has to suspect that Marina Erakovic was too tired after the singles. Cara Black will probably have to wait longer to reach the Top Twenty.
Doubles – Second Round: (16) Goerges/Zahlavova Strycova def. Cornet/Parmentier 6-4 6-0
Now this is more like the Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of old….
Doubles – Second Round: Aoyama/Scheepers def. Olaru/Savchuk 5-7 6-3 6-2
Doubles – Second Round: Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni def. Flipkens/Rybarikova 6-3 4-6 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Blake/Vekic def. Levinsky/Dekmeijere 6-4 6-1
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Butorac/Cornet def. Mertinak/Uhlirova 6-4 3-6 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Brunstrom/Marosi def. Cerretani/Barthel 3-6 6-3 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Emmrich/Goerges def. Cabal/Jovanovski 7-5 6-2
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Farah/Jurak def. Hanley/H Chan 6-2 6-4
It’s hard to believe Paul Hanley will be able to tour much longer if he keeps posting results like these.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Fognini/Pennetta def. Delgado/Moore 7-6(7-2) 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Inglot/Konta def. Almagro/Torro-Flor 4-6 6-3 19-17
An hour and 47 minutes for the third set. 26 aces for Inglot/Konta. When was the last time you saw that many aces in a mixed match? We certainly have no clue….
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Marray/Watson def. Haase/Rosolska 6-3 7-5
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Peers/Barty def. Knowle/Zhang 6-7(7-9) 6-3 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: A Ram/Spears def. Bracciali/Voskoboeva 6-4 6-7(6-8) 6-2
There was a time, years ago, when Andy Ram was the best male Mixed player in the world. He’s fallen hard, but maybe a little of it showed here.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: R Ram/Schiavone def. Klaasen/Rodionova 7-6(8-6) 4-6 6-4
