Wimbledon
Singles – Second Round: (1) N Djokovic def. B Reynolds 7-6(7-2) 6-3 6-1
The day’s schedule was badly disrupted by rain — only 11 of 16 singles matches finished, and less than half the doubles schedule. But Novak Djokovic was under a nice roof while all the trouble was going on….
Singles – Second Round: (7) T Berdych def. D Brands 7-6(8-6) 6-4 6-2
Daniel Brands is now very close to the Top Fifty, but this means he won’t make it at this time.
Singles – Second Round: (8) J del Potro def. J Levine 6-2 7-6(9-7) 6-3
Juan Martin del Potro effectively clinched the #7 ranking when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was forced out, but he will need a lot more than this to go higher. The main effect of this is to continue the mass elimination of American men. (This, the Reynolds loss above, plus the Blake result below mean no American men left.)
Singles – Second Round: (9) R Gasquet def. G Soeda 6-0 6-3 6-7(5-7) 6-3
Tsonga’s defeat not only helped del Potro, it opens a door for Richard Gasquet to become France’s #1. But he needs a semifinal.
Singles – Second Round: (12) K Nishikori def. L Mayer 7-6(7-5) 6-4 6-2
Kei Nishikori moves back ahead of Tommy Haas in the contest for #11, but that is far from settled, and Nishikori or Haas would need a semifinal to make the Top Ten.
Singles – Second Round: I Sijsling def. (17) M Raonic 7-5 6-4 7-6(7-4)
Milos Raonic was the only seed to lose on this short Thursday, and there is a significant chance it will cost him his Top Fifteen spot — Nicolas Almagro needs only one more win to pass him. Igor Sijsling is up to about #55; he’ll be Top Fifty if he wins his next match.
Singles – Second Round: (23) A Seppi def. M Llodra 7-5, retired
Just winning his opener could put Michael Llodra in the Top Fifty, but this means he’ll have to wait a little to be sure. He was one of two French players to retire on Thursday. Is there some cross-channel thing going on here?
Singles – Second Round: (27) K Anderson def. M Przysiezny 6-4 7-6(7-2) 6-4
Kevin Anderson now looks very likely to hit the Top 25. Two more wins might make him Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: B Tomic def. J Blake 6-3 6-4 7-5
Bernard Tomic pulled out of the doubles, but evidently singles is no problem. He is very close to a return to the Top Fifty.
Singles – Second Round: F Lopez def. P Mathieu 6-3 5-1, retired
French Retirement #2 has Feliciano Lopez up to #30 in safe points.
Singles – Second Round: I Dodig def. D Kudla 6-1 7-6(7-4) 7-5
Ivan Dodig is at #40 in safe points, and the next nine guys down the rankings are out. So a Top Forty spot is a genuine possibility even if he loses his next match.
Doubles – First Round: (5) Qureshi/Rojer def. Brown/Junaid 7-6(7-5) 6-4 6-4
The rain did even more damage to the doubles schedule than to the singles; the Bryans, for instance, didn’t get their match in. Qureshi/Rojer move ahead of Leander Paes in the contest for the last Top Ten spot, but Paes didn’t get to finish….
Doubles – First Round: (11) Benneteau/Zimonjic def. Lacko/Polasek 3-6 6-3 6-7(4-7) 6-2 6-1
Anything Nenad Zimonjic does here is a bonus, since he pulled out last year, but he’s still below #15.
Doubles – First Round: (13) Llodra/Mahut def. Hajek/Levinsky 5-4, retired
Funny that Michael Llodra pulled out of the singles, then won in doubles when his opponent pulled out!
Doubles – First Round: (15) Kubot/Matkowski def. Brunstrom/Klaasen 6-4 6-4 7-5
Doubles – First Round: Bednarek/Kowalczyk def. Berankis/Lu 6-2 6-4 6-1
Doubles – First Round: Delgado/Ebden def. Hewitt/Knowles 6-3 7-5 7-6(7-4)
Mixed Doubles – First Round: S. Gonzalez/Grandin def. Monroe/Bartoli 6-4 4-6 6-1
We’re not going to try to talk much about the first round Mixed results. This being a 48-draw, with all the seeded teams having byes, very few of the players in action in this round have strong credentials in either regular doubles or mixed.
****** TODAY’S FEATURE ******
This Week’s Movers — Men
Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.
Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)
Leader: Filippo Volandri — Moved 20 places, from #119 to #99.
Volandri being Volandri, this of course is not the result of points earned on grass. Volandri, rather than play Wimbledon qualifying, played and won the Milan €30K Challenger.
Runner-Up: Guillermo Garcia-Lopez — Moved 11 places, from #78 to #67
Garcia-Lopez made the ‘s-Hertogenbosch semifinal.
Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)
Leader: Feliciano Lopez — Moved 7 places, 18%, from #39 to #32
Lopez won Eastbourne — his first grass title, and only the third of his career.
Runner-Up: Volandri, 17%
Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)
Loser: Gilles Muller — Dropped 16 places, from #88 to #104
Last year, Muller was a quarterfinalist at ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)
Loser: Muller, ranking increased 18%.
Ranking Notes
If you’re wondering how Nicolas Mahut did, his ‘s-Hertogenbosch title allowed him to rise 48%, from #240 to #124. But, of course, that still leaves him below #100 and so ineligible for listing here. Volandri rose 17%, Garcia-Lopez 14%, and no one else rose as much as 10%. Other than Muller, the only Top Hundred player to fall as much as 15% was Ryan Harrison, who slipped from #84 to #97.
Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”
These are subjective picks!
We’d like to give it to Mahut, but we have to follow our own eligibility rules! So it really has to be Lopez.
