Wimbledon

Singles – Second Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Caroline Garcia 6-3 6-2

The only real question left for Serena Williams, other than whether she will win another Slam, is just how large her lead will be over the #2 player. It’s already 2500 points….

Singles – Second Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Mathilde Johansson 6-1 6-3

Agnieszka Radwanska still has a lot of defending to do, but this assures that she will stay ahead of Sara Errani at least — which probably means that she will stay Top Five.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Li Na def. Simona Halep 6-2 1-6 6-0

After eleven straight wins, we can perhaps understand why Simona Halep ran out of gas. This costs her her chance at a Top 25 spot, but a career high still looks likely, and it may well be in the Top Thirty. Li Na will probably hit the Top Five; she too moves past Sara Errani. So Errani will fall to #6 or, just possibly, lower.

Singles – Second Round: (11) Roberta Vinci def. Jana Cepelova 6-1 4-6 9-7

Roberta Vinci keeps her Top Ten hopes alive, but talk about doing it the hard way…. And although she gets a day off in singles, she’ll have doubles tomorrow.

Singles – Second Round: (14) Samantha Stosur def. Olga Puchkova 6-2 6-2

A nice draw for Samantha Stosur, historically no fan of grass. One more win might return her to the Top Ten.

Singles – Second Round: (18) Dominika Cibulkova def. Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-0 6-1

We wouldn’t be surprised if this proves the easiest grass win of Dominika Cibulkova’s entire career. But although she has gone two rounds deeper this year than last, she still hasn’t moved in the rankings.

Singles – Second Round: (23) Sabine Lisicki def. Elena Vesnina 6-3 6-1

Based on current rankings, this is actually a slight upset, but Elena Vesnina is probably tired after six straight wins. This ends her chances for reaching the Top Twenty at this time, but it still seems likely she will make it this year; she’s on pace. Sabine Lisicki still needs more to stay Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Marina Erakovic def. (24) Peng Shuai 7-6(8-6) 6-2

Marina Erakovic rises to around #65, but Peng Shuai will fall below #30.

Singles – Second Round: Madison Keys def. (30) Mona Barthel 6-4 6-2

One more win and Madison Keys will be Top Forty. Mona Barthel will likely be between #30 and #32.

Singles – Second Round: (32) Klara Zakopalova def. Annika Beck 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Klara Zakopalova has defended her points, but she needs at least one more win to return to the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: Kimiko Date-Krumm def. Alexandra Cadantu 6-4 7-5

Kimiko Date-Krumm faces Serena Williams next. Talk about a pair who are wearing their years well! But it doesn’t seem likely to be much of a match.

Singles – Second Round: Petra Martic def. Karolina Pliskova 7-6(9-7) 6-1

Karolina Pliskova loses her chance to rise above #70.

Singles – Second Round: Tsvetana Pironkova def. Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 7-5 6-3

Never bet against Tsvetana Pironkova on grass. On the other hand, never bet on her on anything else…. This will take her several spots above #70.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Dominguez Lino/Muguruza 6-1 6-2

Nadia Petrova keeps at least a little pressure on Errani/Vinci in the contest for #1.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Makarova/Vesnina def. Ka. Pliskova/Torro-Flor 6-2 6-1

Makarova, Vesnina, and Srebotnik are having a pretty good contest for the two open spots in the Top Five (Errani, Vinci, and Petrova have the three safe spots). We currently show the Top Five as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….9275*

1..(1) VINCI …………. 9275*

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7625*

4..(5) MAKAROVA ………..6660*

5..(8) SREBOTNIK ……… 6565*

6..(6) VESNINA ……….. 6511*

7..(4) HLAVACKOVA ………6140*

8..(7) HRADECKA ………..5391*

9.(14) MLADENOVIC ………3840*

10..(9) RAYMOND ……….. 3815*

Doubles – First Round: Aoyama/Scheepers def. (9) Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 3-6 6-3 6-4

Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova have been a fine “stealth” team this year. Maybe they would have preferred not to be seeded….

Doubles – First Round: (13) King/Zheng def. Dolonc/Jovanovski 6-3 6-0

It has been quite a while since we’ve seen Vania King live up to her capacity in doubles. Let’s hope this means she is coming out of her slump. It’s a pure plus for Zheng Jie, who is Top Twenty in doubles but has a lot of room to add points.

Doubles – First Round: Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni def. (15) H Chan/Medina Garrigues 2-6 6-2 6-1

It really seems as if Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni could be a top doubles team if they played enough. It’s hard for them, though, given the gap between their singles rankings.

Doubles – First Round: Bouchard/Martic def. Arruabarrena/Puig 6-2 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Cornet/Parmentier def. Slater/Whybourn 4-6 7-5 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Flipkens/Rybarikova def. Cirstea/Morita 6-3 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Klemenschits/Oprandi def. Castani/Marosi 6-4 4-6 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Pennetta/Petkovic def. Murray/Windley 6-0 2-6 6-2

Mixed Doubles – First Round: S. Gonzalez/Grandin def. Monroe/Bartoli 6-4 4-6 6-1

We’re not going to try to talk much about the first round Mixed results. This being a 48-draw, with all the seeded teams having byes, very few of the players in action in this round have strong credentials in either regular doubles or mixed.

****** TODAY’S FEATURE ******

This Week’s Movers — Women

Each week, Daily Tennis will look at the biggest movers of the week, looking at how they did what they did.

Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)

Leader: Jamie Hampton — Moved 16 places, from #41 to #25.

Hampton qualified for Eastbourne and made it to her first career final.

Runner-Up: Elena Vesnina — Moved 14 places, from #36 to #22.

Vesnina won Eastbourne — her first Premier singles title.

Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)

Leader: Hampton, cut ranking 39%

Runner-Up: Vesnina, 39%

Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)

Loser: Tamira Paszek — Dropped 28 places, from #29 to #57

Last year’s Eastbourne winner retired from her first round match this year.

Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)

Loser: Paszek, ranking increased 97%.

Ranking Notes

It was a good week for moves. Hampton and Vesnina, each up 39%. ‘s-Hertogenbosch champion Simona Halep, up 29%, to #32. Yanina Wickmayer, up 22%, to #40. Other than Paszek’s stunning 95% drop, there wasn’t much in the downward direction; Klara Zakopalova fell 30% (to #43), and Nadia Petrova lost 23% (to #16). No one else fell as much as 16%.

Our Personal Picks for “Best Mover of the Week”

These are subjective picks!

Hampton, Vesnina, and Halep are all good candidates. Since Halep was third in the movers department, we’ll drop her. Hampton rose 39.02%, Vesnina 38.89% — a trivial difference. Hampton is at a career high, Vesnina merely tied hers. Both had their best-ever result. But Vesnina won her event, and beat Hampton to do it, so we’ll go with Vesnina.
