Wimbledon
Singles – Second Round: (2) A Murray def. Y Lu 6-3 6-3 7-5
There isn’t really a lot to say about this except that the locals are loving it. And wow is Andy Murray’s draw opening up….
Singles – Second Round: S Stakhovsky def. (3) R Federer 6-7(5-7) 7-6(7-5) 7-5 7-6(7-5)
Roger Federer won about as many points as Sergei Stakhovsky, but he definitely didn’t win them at the right times! He looked very stiff in this match. Hard to know what else to say.
That ends a lot of streaks. It ends his winning streak at six. And, because Federer will be falling to #5 (just possibly lower), it ends a ten year streak as one of the Top Four. Plus his string of 36 straight Slam quarterfinals — a record that may never be broken — is over. It is also Federer’s worst loss, based on opponent’s ranking, in eleven years.
It may not be the end of an era, but they definitely seem to be playing the closing theme.
Singles – Second Round: E Gulbis def. (6) J Tsonga 3-6 6-3 6-3 retired (knee)
This is rapidly turning into one of the craziest Slams we can remember. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga isn’t particularly injury-prone, but this Wimbledon seems to be special. He will fall from #7 to no better than #8. Ernests Gulbis is up to around #35.
Singles – Second Round: K de Schepper def. (10) M Cilic walkover (knee)
Maybe they should just play on a skating rink. Safer. Marin Cilic, who made the fourth round last year, will fall to #13 or lower.
Singles – Second Round: (15) N Almagro def. G Rufin 7-5 6-7(6-8) 6-3 6-4
Nicolas Almagro defends his points. He needs at least one more win to move up — but at the rate players are going down around him, that seems perfectly possible.
Singles – Second Round: A Mannarino def. (18) J Isner 1-1, retired (knee)
Is John Isner going to pay for one incredibly long Wimbledon match with a lifetime of short matches?
Isner hurt his knee at the beginning of this match, tried to get treatment, then quit. It has been an awful event for Americans — Brian Baker and Mardy Fish couldn’t play, Sam Querrey lost first round, now this. Because Querrey lost points, Isner moves up to become the #1 American, and he is likely to hit the Top Twenty, but for American men, the event is just about over….
Singles – Second Round: (20) M Youzhny def. V Pospisil 6-2 6-7(3-7) 7-6(9-7) 3-6 6-4
This should keep Mikhail Youzhny in the Top 35, but he needs two more victories to stay Top Thirty.
Singles – Second Round: (22) J Monaco def. R Ram 5-7 6-2 6-4 6-2
When all the grass-lovers are going down, the grass-hater is doing just fine…. Juan Monaco’s Top Twenty spot isn’t guaranteed yet, but it looks very likely.
Singles – Second Round: (24) J Janowicz def. R Stepanek 6-2 5-3, retired (hamstring)
Radek Stepanek loses a few points, but it looks as if he wil stay Top Fifty.
Singles – Second Round: (25) B Paire def. S Robert 6-4 7-5 6-4
This should keep Benoit Paire Top Thirty.
Singles – Second Round: F Verdasco def. (31) J Benneteau 7-6(7-1) 7-6(7-4) 6-4
Once again Julien Benneteau loses a Top Thirty chance. Fernando Verdasco has now defended his points, and he looks likely to go higher in the coming weeks; he seems finally to be getting his singles game back together. (Ironic that he and David Marrero didn’t play doubles. Maybe Verdasco was expecting his singles to come around.)
Singles – Second Round: (32) T Robredo def. (WC) N Mahut 7-6(7-3) 6-1 7-6(7-5)
One more win would probably put Tommy Robredo back in the Top 25.
Singles – Second Round: D Brown def. L Hewitt 6-4 6-4 6-7(3-7) 6-2
Nuts. Just nuts. That is all. Well, that plus the fact that Lleyton Hewitt will remain below #60.
Singles – Second Round: J Melzer def. J Reister 3-6 7-6(7-2) 7-6(7-5) 6-2
Jurgen Melzer will likely rise above #35.
Singles – Second Round: L Kubot def. S Darcis walkover (shoulder)
What does it say about Rafael Nadal that he couldn’t beat an injured Steve Darcis?
Singles – Second Round: V Troicki def. And. Kuznetsov 6-4 6-3 6-4
This might be enough to keep Viktor Troicki Top Fifty, although we’d guess he needs one more win.
Doubles – First Round: Cabal/Farah def. (2) Granollers/M Lopez 6-7(1-7) 7-5 7-5 7-6(7-5)
The craziness obviously isn’t limited to singles. Lopez and Granollers remain #3 and #4 for now, but they have opened the doors for someone, perhaps Peya/Soares. We currently estimate the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) Bryan………….12470
1..(1) Bryan………….12470
3..(3) Lopez…………..5550
4..(4) Granollers………5550
5..(6) Soares………….4990
6..(7) Bhupathi………..4955
7..(9) Peya……………4910
8.(10) Bopanna…………4750
9..(5) Lindstedt……….4150
10.(11) Paes……………4010
Doubles – First Round: (6) Lindstedt/Nestor def. Elgin/Istomin 7-6(8-6) 6-3 6-7(9-11) 7-6(7-2)
Robert Lindstedt was last year’s finalist, so this was a pretty big scare. You’ll note that he is just clinging to the Top Ten.
Doubles – First Round: (7) Mirnyi/Tecau def. Meffert/Oswald 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4
A scare for Horia Tecau, too — and he isn’t clinging to the Top Ten; we show him #13 in safe points.
Doubles – First Round: (8) Bhupathi/Knowle def. L Mayer/Ramos 6-2 6-7(5-7) 6-4 6-2
Doubles – First Round: (9) Fleming/Marray def. Klizan/Zelenay 7-6(7-4) 4-6 6-3 6-4
Last year’s champion also gets a scare.
Doubles – First Round: (14) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin def. Nieminen/Tursunov 7-6(7-5) 6-2 7-6(8-6)
Doubles – First Round: (16) Huey/Inglot def. Bautista Agut/Gimeno-Traver 6-3 6-4 7-5
Doubles – First Round: Begemann/Emmrich def. Kudla/Smyczek 6-2 6-7(4-7) 6-4 6-1
Doubles – First Round: Brands/Rosol def. Fognini/Starace 6-4 6-4 6-4
Doubles – First Round: Dimitrov/Nielsen def. Tomic/Troicki 6-3 1-2, retired
On the other hand, last year’s other champion had a nice easy day. Odd that Tomic/Troicki pulled out, given that they seem fine in singles.
Doubles – First Round: Groth/Guccione def. Johnson/Siljestrom 7-6(7-5) 7-6(8-6) 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Marrero/Seppi def. J Baker/Edmund 6-4 7-5 6-2
Doubles – First Round: Matosevic/Moser def. Rice/Thornley 6-4 6-3 6-7(7-9) 4-6 6-4
Doubles – First Round: Schwank/Zeballos def. Haase/Sijsling 6-4 6-7(7-9) 6-3 6-4

Note that fully four of the teams seeded in the actual draw — Peya/Groenefeld, Marrero/Date-Krumm, Dodig/Erakovic, and Huey/Kops-Jones — would not be seeded under Mixed. Only one team, Paes/Zheng, has the same seeding in both systems.
If we do our usual list of who moves where, it looks like this:
PROMOTED FOUR SEEDING TIERS:
Cermak/Hradecka (from #12 to #1)
PROMOTED TWO SEEDING TIERS:
Matkowski/Peschke (from #11 to #3)
Bhupathi/Hantuchova (from unseeded to #9)
Bracciali/Voskoboeva (from unseeded to #10)
Gonzalez/Grandin (from unseeded to #12)
PROMOTED ONE SEEDING TIER:
Qureshi/Black (from #10 to #8)
Murray/Hsieh (from unseeded to #16)
SAME SEEDING TIER:
Zimonjic/Srebotnik (from #3 to #4)
Melo/Huber (from #6 to #5)
Nestor/Mladenovic (from #8 to #6)
Lipsky/Dellacqua (from #13 to #14)
Paes/Zheng (Seeded #15 in both systems)
DEMOTED ONE SEEDING TIER:
Soares/Raymond (from #2 to #1)
Marrero/Date-Krumm (from #14 to unseeded)
Dodig/Erakovic (from #16 to unseeded)
DEMOTED TWO SEEDING TIERS:
Tecau/Mirza (from #2 to #7)
Mirnyi/Hlavackova (from #4 to #11)
Bopanna/Zheng (from #7 to #13)
Huey/Kops-Jones (from #9 to unseeded)
DEMOTED THREE SEEDING TIERS:
Peya/Groenefeld (from #5 to unseeded)
Of course, Wimbledon is the only Slam with a 48-draw. Does that make any difference in the meanings of the seedings? We’ll find out….
