Wimbledon

Singles – Second Round: Flavia Pennetta def. (2) Victoria Azarenka walkover (knee)

Victoria Azarenka had suffered this injury in her first round match, and it obviously did not respond well to treatment. The loss will drop Azarenka to #3; Maria Sharapova will be the new #2.

Singles – Second Round: Michelle Larcher de Brito def. (3) Maria Sharapova 6-3 6-4

Would you like your court regular or extra slippery?

That could almost be the question of the day from the groundskeepers on court 2, which lived up to its graveyard reputation on Wednesday, eliminating Lleyton Hewitt, Marin Cilic, Caroline Wozniacki, and Sharapova. Sharapova never looked comfortable, and she had several slips; she called the trainer in the second set. Because she loses relatively few points, she will rise from #3 to #2 — but she isn’t going to threaten #1 any time soon. And what a draw — we’ve now lost three of the top five seeds!

Singles – Second Round: (8) Petra Kvitova def. Yaroslava Shvedova walkover (right arm)

At least Wimbledon is an Equal Opportunity Injurer — it’s not just seeds going down. But that’s bad news for Yaroslava Shvedova in more ways than one; she will fall below #60.

Singles – Second Round: Petra Cetkovska def. (9) Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 6-2

Caroline Wozniacki took a spill in this match. And Petra Cetkovska, before she got injured, was doing a lot of damage and had herself in the Top Thirty, so this isn’t a huge surprise, but it’s certainly not anything Caroline Wozniacki needed. She will likely stay #9, but she loses any chance to climb.

Singles – Second Round: Eugenie Bouchard def. (12) Ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-3

It was truly a crummy grass season for Ana Ivanovic. And she made the fourth round last year. So she will fall from #12 to no better than #15; there is a fair chance it will be lower. Eugenie Bouchard will be in the #55 range.

Singles – Second Round: (15) Marion Bartoli def. Christina McHale 7-5 6-4

Marion Bartoli hasn’t moved much yet, but talk about a big chance — she is the top seed left in what had been Maria Sharapova’s quarter.

Singles – Second Round: Vesna Dolonc def. (16) Jelena Jankovic 7-5 6-2

Memo to Jelena Jankovic: Yes, we know you hate grass. That’s not an excuse…. Jankovic loses the chance to hit the Top Ten although she does regain her status as Serbia’s #1; she might be as high as #11 next week.

Singles – Second Round: (17) Sloane Stephens def. Andrea Petkovic 7-6(7-2) 2-6 8-6

The good news for Sloane Stephens is, she can now get to the quarterfinal without facing a seed; all the other seeds in her eighth are down. The bad news is… whew, shat a scoreline! But this might be enough to take her to #16.

Singles – Second Round: (19) Carla Suarez Navarro def. Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 1-6 6-3 6-3

Carla Suarez Navarro hasn’t risen in the rankings yet, but every point she earns here is a bonus; she has a fair chance if she can win her next match.

Singles – Second Round: (20) Kirsten Flipkens def. Bojana Jovanovski 6-4 6-4

Talk about a lousy day for Serbs… Ivanovic, Jankovic, Jovanovski all out. Bojana Jovanovski will be around #36.

Singles – Second Round: Camila Giorgi def. (22) Sorana Cirstea 7-6(9-7) 7-6(8-6)

This was the last match of the day, so the upset was truly the same old story. Sorana Cirstea loses her Top Twenty chance.

Singles – Second Round: (25) Ekaterina Makarova def. Garbine Muguruza 6-2 6-7(3-7) 6-4

Ekaterina Makarova is a strong argument that the women, like the men, should seed according to grass preferences. She would surely be in the Top 24 seeds. She has put herself in the Top 25 in the rankings. And, of course, the draw is getting to be very open.

Singles – Second Round: Karin Knapp def. (27) Lucie Safarova 4-6 6-4 6-4

We’re running out of ways to say, “Wow, what a wild day,” but you probably get the idea…. Karin Knapp is now firmly in the Top Hundred; Lucie Safarova loses her chance to hit the Top 25.

Singles – Second Round: (29) Alize Cornet def. Hsieh Su-Wei 6-3 6-2

A fairly noteworthy result for Alize Cornet, considering the surface. This will likely put her in the Top Thirty. Hsieh Su-Wei remains below #40.

Singles – Second Round: Eva Birnerova def. Lesia Tsurenko 6-3 6-4

Even in parts of the draw where the seeds are out, we’re getting monster upsets — Eva Birnerova is ranked 83 places behind Lesia Tsurenko!

Singles – Second Round: Monica Puig def. Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2 5-7 6-4

Monica Puig will be rising above #60.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Keothavong/Konta 6-3 6-1

Sara Errani had to skip Eastbourne, and lost her singles opener here, so it’s good to see her playing well in doubles. Evidently her physical problems aren’t too bad. Errani and Vinci could theoretically lose the #1 ranking to Nadia Petrova here, but it doesn’t look likely. We currently estimate the doubles Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….9275*

1..(1) VINCI …………. 9275*

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7625*

4..(8) SREBOTNIK ……… 6565*

5..(5) MAKAROVA ………..6505*

6..(6) VESNINA ……….. 6356*

7..(4) HLAVACKOVA ………6140*

8..(7) HRADECKA ………..5391*

9.(14) MLADENOVIC ………3840*

10..(9) RAYMOND ……….. 3815*

Doubles – First Round: (6) Huber/Mirza def. Voracova/Zakopalova 6-3 3-6 6-1

Doubles – First Round: (7) Groenefeld/Peschke def. Cibulkova/Niculescu 6-4 7-5

Doubles – First Round: (8) Hsieh/Peng def. Dushevina/Panova 7-5 6-1

Doubles – First Round: (11) Black/Erakovic def. Jugic-Salkic/Watson 6-2 6-0

Cara Black has had enough stumbles recently that we no longer like the idea of guessing when she will hit the Top Twenty — but it still looks as if it will happen.

Doubles – First Round: (14) Hantuchova/Kirilenko def. Irigoyen/Ormaechea 6-1 6-4

Maria Kirilenko has almost stopped playing doubles. Interesting that she decided to play here. Perhaps she didn’t expect to do much in singles?

Doubles – First Round: (16) Goerges/Zahlavova Strycova def. Begu/Husarova 6-3 6-4

One of the better results of Barbora Zahlavova Strycova’s comeback, which so far hasn’t been much fun.

Doubles – First Round: Cepelova/Kalashnikova def. Falconi/Maria 4-6 6-1 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Foretz Gacon/Hrdinova def. Halep/Tatishvili 2-6 6-3 6-3

The rest of the world will no doubt be thrilled to know that Simona Halep can still lose, even if it’s only in doubles….

Doubles – First Round: Grandin/Uhlirova def. Beck/Buryachok 7-5 6-7(6-8) 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Jurak/Tanasugarn def. Govortsova/Rosolska 3-6 6-2 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Moulton-Levy/Zhang def. Barthel/Dekmeijere 6-4 5-7 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Pironkova/Wickmayer def. Keys/Oudin 6-4 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Raymond/Robson def. Schiavone/Stosur 6-3 6-1

An interesting contest of ex-partners. You’d think Samantha Stosur’s power and Francesca Schiavone’s crazy shots would be effective. But neither one likes grass, and Raymond/Robson do.

Doubles – First Round: Olaru/Savchuk def. Babos/Minella 6-2 6-4
