Serena Williams mowed down Mandy Minella 6-1, 6-3, with the top-seeded holder needing just 19 minutes to sweep the Luxembourg challenger ranked 92 and without a win from two main-draw matches played at the All England club.

But Williams had a weak moment when – after failing to lose a point on serve in the opening set – lost her first service game of the second before quickly putting things in order with the win into the second round.

As usual, Williams came into the event without any grass-court play, preferring to return to Florida after winning the French Open. But she knows what she need to do to win consistently on the surface: “You have to definitely adapt to the bounce. You have to adapt to the games going really fast, the match moving really fast, points are fast. Also they’re really low. You have to really bend your knees, get low, stay low, be really dedicated to that.”

2012 finalist Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded fourth, beat Austrian Yvonne Meusburger 6-1, 6-1. China’s sixth seed Li Na was equally ruthless with Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-1 while former US Open winner Samantha Stosur, seeded 14th, earned a confidence-building victory over Slovak Anna Schmiedlova 6-1, 6-3.

German seventh seed Angelique Kerber advanced over Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who had her hair dyed Wimbledon green-and-purple, 6-3, 6-4, Laura Robson booked a win for the home side as she upset Russian tenth seed Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-4 while Italian No. 11 Roberta Vinci beat South African Chanelle Scheepers 6-2, 6-1. Czech Karolina Pliskova sprung another upset, beating 12th seed Nadia Petrova 6-3, 6-2.

Li and Stosur had poor buildup weeks on British grass at Eastbourne and were both pleased to have adjusted their games. “It was a pretty good start for Wimbledon, over the last two years I didn’t do on the grass court,” said Li. “I have to get used to play on the grass. But I was feeling pretty happy today.

Stosur, who has only once reached the third round (2009) was equally pleased. “This was probably one of my better matches on grass, it’s obviously a good feeling. Hopefully a good sign,” said the 29-year-old. “Even before today I felt like I was playing well.

“I felt I’ve been moving better, I obviously don’t know what that’s going to equate to, but hopefully it’s going to mean a decent tournament for me, because I do feel like I’ve been playing a lot more confidently on the grass at the moment this time around.”

Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm, aged 42, beat a German teenager well under half her age as she put out Carina Witthoeft 6-0, 6-2. American Madison Keys continued the rout of British women with her defeat of Heather Watson 6-3, 7-5
