Wimbledon
Women’s second seed Victoria Azarenka escaped with an opening win over Maria Joao Koehler of Portugal 6-1, 6-2 after wrenching her knee but playing on.
“My leg just kind of collapsed, I felt like my knee just turned to the other way, and it was just so nasty,” said the Belarus player after slipping on a slick spot on the grass, “I was in such shock. For two minutes I had such a consistent pain that it just completely freaked me out. You’re just down on the ground, you never knew what happened.”
Third seed Maria Sharapova had a fright of a different sort, trailing Kristina Mladenovic in the first set before lifting her game for a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over the Frenchwoman. Sharapova said her tennis is fine and she’s all business on the court. That’s the reason she won’t extend the “war” of the WTA divas which erupted over the weekend with Serena Williams after a controversial magazine article.
“Honestly, I’ve said everything that I wanted to say about the issue,” said 2004 champion Sharapova. “Wimbledon has started. This is my work, this is my job. I’d really appreciate it if we move on.
Italian fifth seed Sara Errani became the fortnight’s first upset victim, losing 6-3, 6-2 by Monica Puig of Puerto Rico. Former number ones got wins as Caroline Wozniacki beat a Spaniard and Ana Ivanovic, seeded 12th, overcame Virginie Razzano 7-6(1), 6-0. The 16th seeded Jelena Jankovic beat Briton Johanna Konta 6-2, 7-5.
Four Americans were short-lived on opening day with Czech Eva Birnerova beating Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, Lucie Safarova defeating Lauren Davis 6-4, 6-0, France’s Alize Cornet, France overcoming Vania King 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Michelle Larcher De Brito putting out Melanie Oudin 7-6(7), 1-6, 6-4. Christina McHale of the US beat compatriot Alexa Glatch 6-4, 6-4 while Sloane Stephens did the same to weekend Eastbourne finalist Jamie Hampton 6-3, 6-3.
