Wayne Odesnik, back to 107th place on the ATP World our rankings and a successful qualifier for Wimbledon, is back under investigation after fresh allegations of doping connections after receiving a two year ban for trying to import human growth hormone (HGH) into Australia.
The Florida based South African had half his ban suspended by the International Tennis Federation after effectively becoming a ‘whistle blower’ or informant when he agreed to give ‘substantial assistance in relation to the enforcement of professional rules of conduct’.
But now the 27 year-old has come under fresh scrutiny after his name appeared in the hand-written records of a Miami clinic at the centre of a developing doping scandal engulfing American sport.
The clinic’s founder, Tony Bosch, is being investigated for allegedly supplying banned drugs to stars, mainly from baseball and boxing. Odesnik’s name appears in the records for 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Odesnik has denied being a client of Bosch and firmly maintained: “I have never purchased HGH nor any other illegal/banned substances from any person.”
However Dr Stuart Miller, the ITF’s Executive Director of Science and Technology and the person at the forefront of tennis’ anti-doping campaign, maintains his body is following up with investigations into the allegations centering on Odesnik.
Britain’s Mail on Sunday newspaper has printed knowledge of documents that suggest Odesnik has passed information to the authorities, detailing fellow players and relating to drugs and corruption.
