Eastbourne
Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) G Simon def. B Tomic 7-6(10-8) 6-3
Earning points on grass is good news for Gilles Simon, one of the few Frenchmen who doesn’t seem to like fast courts much — but he can’t move above his current #17 this week.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) A Seppi def. R Stepanek 6-4 6-2
Andreas Seppi’s liking for grass is obviously unabated — but he needs a title here if he is to stay Top 25.
Singles – Quarterfinal: I Dodig def. (8) F Fognini 6-3 6-2
This is turning into a pretty good comeback year for Ivan Dodig. He leaves Fabio Fognini still stuck at #30.
Singles – Quarterfinal: F Lopez def. F Verdasco 6-4 7-6(8-6)
As a Wimbledon winner, Rafael Nadal must surely be counted the best grass player among the Spaniards, but Feliciano Lopez is probably the one who likes the surface most. He hasn’t moved much yet — we show him rising only from #39 to #37 — but he is a genuine candidate to win here.
Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Peya/Soares def. J Murray/Peers 6-4 6-4
Doubles – Semifinal: (4) Fleming/Marray def. Matkowski/Nielsen 3-6 6-3 11-9
‘s-Hertogenbosch
Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) S Wawrinka def. (5) J Chardy 6-4 7-6(7-2)
Jeremy Chardy added enough points that he will make the Top 25 unless Andreas Seppi wins Wimbledon. Stanislas Wawrinka can’t move, but a grass title would be a very nice — and very unexpected! — addition to his record.
Singles – Quarterfinal: G Garcia-Lopez def. (Q) J Hernych 6-4 6-1
Both these guys like fast courts, but Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is simply the better player. This was still big for Jan Hernych — it matches his best result of the last year, and increases his point total by about a quarter. As well as tripling his ATP win total for the year.
Singles – Quarterfinal: X Malisse def. R Bautista Agut 6-4 6-4
The Xavier Malisse Grass Machine marches on — but it still hasn’t done him any good, because he was defending semifinalist points.
Singles – Quarterfinal: N Mahut (Q) def. E Donskoy 6-3 7-6(7-1)
Nicolas Mahut adds more than 50% to his point total. He’s now well above #200. He must really be looking forward to Wimbledon.
Doubles – Semifinal: Begemann/Emmrich def. (1) Qureshi/Rojer 6-7(2-7) 7-6(9-7) 10-4
Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Mirnyi/Tecau def. (WC) de Bakker/Huta Galung 7-6(7-4) 7-6(7-3)
