Men's Tennis Update (6/20) - Eastbourne/'s-Hertogenbosch  |

Wimbledon (and a Pretty Major Correction)

As you have probably heard by now, Wimbledon has released its adjusted men’s seeding list. And there were adjustments — e.g. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was promoted from #7 to #6. More significantly, Philipp Kohlschreiber rose from #18 to #16, while Andreas Seppi gained a tier to #23.

But Rafael Nadal was not promoted from #5 to #4. We can only say that we did not have the correct seeding formula for this year. (Keep in mind that Wimbledon does not announce the formula in advance. We went by a news report of what was used last year.)

The full seed list is as follows:

1. Novak Djokovic

2. Andy Murray

3. Roger Federer

4. David Ferrer

5. Rafael Nadal

6. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

7. Tomas Berdych

8. Juan Martin Del Potro

9. Richard Gasquet

10. Marin Cilic

11. Stanislas Wawrinka

12. Kei Nishikori

13. Tommy Haas

14. Janko Tipsarevic

15. Nicolas Almagro

16. Philipp Kohlschreiber

17. Milos Raonic

18. John Isner

19. Gilles Simon

20. Mikhail Youzhny

21. Sam Querrey

22. Juan Monaco

23. Andreas Seppi

24. Jerzy Janowicz

25. Benoit Paire

26. Alexandr Dolgopolov

27. Kevin Anderson

28. Jeremy Chardy

29. Grigor Dimitrov

30. Fabio Fognini

31. Julien Benneteau

32. Tommy Robredo

Eastbourne

Singles – Second Round: I Dodig def. (1) (WC) M Raonic 6-2 7-6(9-7)

Hey, Wimbledon, can we demote Milos Raonic another seeding tier or two? It looks like he deserves it. (How can a guy with Raonic’s serve lose a 6-2 set on grass, anyway?) Raonic will stay #15, but his Wimbledon preparations have been disastrous, so he may have a tough time next week.

Singles – Second Round: (2) G Simon def. (WC) K Edmund 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-3)

Interesting that Gilles Simon, no fan of fast courts, is the last seed standing here. But then, he faced the weakest opposition. Kyle Edmund still looks promising — at least by British standards.

Singles – Second Round: R Stepanek def. (3) P Kohlschreiber 7-5 6-3

Philipp Kohlschreiber blows another chance to rise above #18. Radek Stepanek might make it to #45 as a result of the win.

Singles – Second Round: Lopez def. (4) J Monaco 6-4 6-4

Given the surface, this surely does not count as an upset. But it means that Juan Monaco yet again stay stuck at #20.

Singles – Second Round: (7) A Seppi def. R Harrison (Q) 3-6 7-5 6-3

Grass continues to be a rewarding surface for Andreas Seppi — but he needs two more points to defend his ranking. At least his Top Thirty spot is now secure.

Singles – Second Round: (8) F Fognini def. M Klizan 6-7(6-8) 6-2 6-2

It appears Martin Klizan will remain stuck at #25. Fabio Fognini is still at #30, but one more win might gain him as many as three places.

Singles – Second Round: B Tomic def. J Benneteau 6-2 5-7 7-6(7-4)

It really does seem as if Bernard Tomic is finally starting to get his emotional equilibrium back. He leaves Julien Benneteau still probably #32.

Singles – Second Round: F Verdasco def. A Ramos 6-4 6-0

More evidence that Fernando Verdasco has come back to life, but we’d guess he won’t return to the Top Fifty until Wimbedon at the earliest.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Peya/Soares def. Klizan/Matosevic 6-4 7-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: J Murray/Peers def. (3) Paes/Stepanek 1-6 6-3 10-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Fleming/Marray def. Butorac/A Ram 7-5 7-6(7-2)

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Matkowski/Nielsen def. Hanley/Skupski 7-5 7-6(7-3)

‘s-Hertogenbosch

Singles – Second Round: (2) S Wawrinka def. P Lorenzi 6-3 7-6(10-8)

Stanislas Wawrinka can’t move in the rankings this week, but historically, grass has not been his surface, so this probably counts as promising.

Singles – Second Round: (5) J Chardy def. (WC) M Copil 7-5 6-4

There is a fair chance this will put Jeremy Chardy in the Top 25, although he needs two more wins — one of them over Wawrinka — to mathematically clinch.

Singles – Second Round: X Malisse def. Y Lu 3-6 6-1 6-4

Xavier Malisse continues to be a real danger on grass, although not much of anywhere else. That’s significant, because there are no seeds left in the top half. This is a real chance for him to get back into the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: R Bautista Agut def. C Berlocq 6-2 6-3

Neither of these guys is an obvious threat on grass, but Bautista Agut is certainly in better form right now.

Singles – Second Round: E Donskoy def. R Haase 6-4 7-5

When Evgeny Donskoy hit the Top Hundred, we frankly wondered why — all he had at the time was Challengers. But maybe it wasn’t a fluke after all. He’s starting to win ATP matches, although mostly against weak opposition so far.

Singles – Second Round: N Mahut (Q) def. And. Kuznetsov 6-2 6-4

By the look of things, Nicolas Mahut could do some damage at Wimbledon this year — assuming he doesn’t face John Isner in the first round….

Singles – Second Round: J Hernych (Q) def. M Llodra 6-7(5-7) 6-4 7-5

Jan Hernych seems to be one of those guys who might actually amount to something if only there were a lot more grass in the world. This has to be pretty disappointing to Michael Llodra, who appears to be stuck just below the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: G Garcia-Lopez def. D Brands 7-6(9-7) 6-2

Once again Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, despite being Spanish, seems to be finding fast surfaces more comfortable than slow.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Mirnyi/Tecau def. Bracciali/Erlich 6-4 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Begemann/Emmrich def. (4) Llodra/Mahut 6-4 6-4

Doubles – First Round: (WC) de Bakker/Huta Galung def. Mergea/Polasek 3-6 6-4 10-8 .
