Eastbourne
Top players started well on the pre-Wimbledon grass, with China’s second seed Li Na leading the way as she advanced over Alize Cornet 6-2, 6-4. That set the pace for No.3 German Angelique Kerber, who put out Sorona Cirstea 6-4, 6-4. 2011 Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova beat Romanian Monica Niculescu 6-4, 6-1.
Brits split a pair, as Taiwan’s Hsieh Su Wei beat Johanna Konta 6-4, 6-3 while home player Elena Baltacha put out Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). Laura Robson then took a win over Yuliya Beygelzimer 6-3, 6-2.
American Jamie Hampton sprung a surprise as she beat top seed Agnieszka Radwanska 7-6(2), 6-2, sending the Pole out in the first round for the second year in a row at the event.
Tamira Paszek is now in danger of missing Wimbledon with a left thigh injury she suffered early in her 6-2, 2-2 loss to No.5 Caroline Wozniacki, Austrian Paszek, ranked 29th, was defending champion on the south coast and played Wimbledon quarters for the past two editions.
Paszek said she felt the injury early in the match. “I can’t say really much about the injury just now, I just have to do a couple more scans and analyses with the doctor. All I can say is it’s like really, really painful. Well, I’m going to try my very best to get ready for Wimbledon and try to be positive,” she said.
“It happened at 1-1, I stretched a bit too much on the backhand side and actually heard a huge noise, which isn’t usually a good sign. It was a sudden pain and I immediately called the trainer. I actually won that game, played like three winners on one leg. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to continue.
“I’m going to try my best to even go on court in Wimbledon, try to get ready. “If not it doesn’t work out, I’ll try to get healthy after that and make a new start. There is nothing else I can do about it.”
Former No. 1 Wozniacki was watched by golfer boyfriend Rory McIlroy watched sleepily after arriving from the US Open tournament at 6 am. “I think I played a really good first set. I felt really good and comfortable out there,” said fifth seed Wozniacki, the 2009 champion. “It was unfortunate that she got an injury and had to retire in the second one.”
‘s-Hertogenbosch
Italian top seed began with a grass victory as she defeated Kaia Kalepi 6-3, 6-3, but the pre-Wimbledon event ended almost before it began for compatriot Francesca Schiavone who lost to fourth seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Birmingham title winner Daniela Hantuchova lasted only five games before retiring against Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine 5-0.
In the second round, third seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain continued her successful transition from clay to grass, beating Swede Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 6-4. Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova put out Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu 7-6(7), 6-2. Seventh seed Urszula Radwanska stopped Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova 4-3 in an injury abbreviated match.
