Eastbourne
Australian Bernard Tomic is back on winning track just in time for Wimbledon next week after beating Briton James Ward 6-3, 6-4 to advance into the second round. Tomic said he felt nothing of the hamstring injury which he dealt with a week ago in a loss at Queen’s.
The No. 64 said that with a bit of continued form, he might just be able to challenge as successfully as he did two years ago with a Wimbledon quarter-final
“This was an important win, it’s a big relief to get this one,” he said. “I’ve been happy with my tennis in training over the last three or four days. The hamstring is 100 per cent now. If I can get some more wins like this on grass, it will really help my confidence. I think I have a chance to do well again.”
Spain’s Feliciano Lopez, twice a quarter-finalist at the All England Club, beat Finn Jarkko Nieminen 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5). Slovak Martin Klizan beat Victor Troicki 6-3, 6-2, and Ivan Dodig stropped Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-4.

Top seed David Ferrer will head to what is likely to be a Wimbledon fourth seeding one spot ahead of Rafael Nadal without a grass match win after losing in his opening attempt as he went down to Xavier Malisse 7-6(3), 6-3. Ferrer was on court for the first time since losing the French Open final to Nadal and will stand ahead of his celebrated compatriot in the seeding unless the All England club break with recent tradition and revise some of the seedings as is their right. Malisse is quite comfortable on the grass and played a Wimbledon semi-final a decade ago.
French fourth seed Benoit Paire lost as well as he was ambushed by countryman Michael Llodra 3-0 before retiring with a right thigh injury only moments into the match. Nicolas Mahut earned a French win, beating Ricarkus Berankis 6-1, 6-4. Fifth seed Jeremy Chardy beat fellow Frenchman Lucas Pouille 7-5, 6-4. Czech Jan Hernych stopped Belgian David Goffin 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4) while Lu Yen-hsun beat Christophe Roger-Vasselin 6-1, 7-6(3).
