Former No.1 Ana Ivanovic sees is pleased with her budding grass court form despite losing in her opening match, going down 2-6. 6-4, 6-3 to Russian Elena Vesnina. The Serb does not have an enviable history at Devonshire park, winning just one match from four played. “Not a very good record,” she admitted.

The 12th-ranked Ivanovic saved two match points in the final game but was unable to overcome the 5-3 lead which Vesnina had built up as the Russian won her first match at the south coast venue. “I really felt I played well in the beginning, and it was just a few points here and there that really decided the match,” she said. “In the second and third set she served a lot better than in the first, it made a difference on the grass. It’s always tough when you play your first match, everything sometimes happens too fast.

“On grass it’s very hard to get rhythm. You don’t get many long rallies and long points. But overall I was pleased with my serving today.”

Unseeded 2011 champion Marion Bartoli began with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Italian Flavia Pennetta while Belgian Yanina Wickmayer reached the second round over American Christina McHale, 6-3, 6-4. Last summer’s Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska heads the women’s field at the joint event which marks the last official tune-up for Wimbledon.

The Pole ranked fourth lost in the Eastbourne first round but went onto face Serena Williams in the title match at the All England club in her first major final. While Radwanska only plants her feet on grass during her few weeks in Britain, she does have an explanation as to why she can feel so immediately comfortable on the surface.

She and he sister Ursula train frequently on synthetic grass at home in Krakow during the off-season, when there is nothing else available. “We don’t have any hard courts in my city, and certainly no real grass. In the winter, synthetic grass is all we have.”

Heather Watson made a winning British start over Varavara Lepchenko of the US 6-3, 6-4 while Yanina Wickmayer beat American Christina McHale 6-3, 6-4.

‘s-Hertogenbosch

The “alternative,” non-British, pre-Wimbledon grass event got underway as weather began clearing in Europe just in time for final grand slam preparations. Spain’s third seed Carla Suarez Navarro made a winning debut at the venue as she posted a quick win over Swede Johanna Larsson 6-3, 6-2 while Swiss Stefanie Voegele advanced over Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

Romanian Simona Halep beat Germany’s Annika Beck, at 19 the youngest player in the field, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3; compatriot Irina-Camelia Begu took a victory over Belgian An-Sophie Mestach 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-4.

American Lauren Davis joined in by defeating Czech Andrea Hlavackova 6-3, 6-4.
